Bruce fans who are dismissive of BITUSA are so boring.

They're the equivalent of movie fans who say hate every blockbuster because they think it elevates their opinion.

Sat down with Magic for the first time in awhile and god damn does it work as a complete record. What a gift to have gotten records as great as The Rising, Magic, Wrecking Ball and Letter to You in his late career.

Magic is the one that just seems to get better and better the older I get. There's some thematic heft to that one, about aging and mortality, that I didn't totally tap into when it first came out.

  9. Magic is my favorite record of his post-Tunnel of Love I think

It's also got this hard-won joy to it. Even on some of the ones with bummer lyrics, musically and melodically there's a crackling life to "You'll Be Coming Down", "Living in the Future", "Girls in Their Summer Clothes" and "I'll Work for Your Love"

I'm giving it a listen for the first time in years. "Your Own Worst Enemy" could totally slot into Western Stars.

Oh man, this is sad! It sounds like she'll be ok, but it's a big life adjustment.

Can't disagree too much, but I do have a soft spot for the Wrecking Ball cover. I think that's a pretty cool design.

I'd had that same thought about "Devil's Arcade" recently.

Honestly "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" wouldn't be too far off either. I attribute this same melodic "brightness" and production to the music on Western Stars.

Yeah, there's definitely similarity in those albums, thematically and melodically. One has that more classic Springsteen sound, the other gets put through the Glen Campbell/classic country filter.
