I didn’t watch much tonight after watching more of it last night than I had Monday or Tuesday. I’m glad people are excited down there and all but these things are just not really for me anymore it seems. I mean some of the stories and successes some of the governors and legislators there talk about are good but beyond that it it’s all just fluff and no substance anymore. Which makes it even more dumb and anger inducing that they wouldn’t let the Palestinian woman/rep from Georgia speak.

like I get that it’s cool for some people and we’re a celebrity driven culture but I really don’t give a shit about watching John Legend put on a show or whatever. I wanna know what your plans are.

One of the many, many things I don't get about Kamala's speech (and honestly, to a reasonable extent, the entire DNC as a whole) is she didn't ever go "electing me is not enough. the only way we can actually get any of this done is if we keep the senate and take back the house"

its both an instant counter to the people who try to go "wHy DoNt yOu Do SoMeThInG nOw" and also... its just good politics

Seeing the folks covering their ears and shaking their heads at the protestors leaving the DNC gives me a visceral sense memory reminder that, no matter how comfortable I may feel at times, I’ll never be part of America’s in-tribe and, if/when shit goes tribal, in a macro or micro sense, nationally or interpersonally, they’ll have no issue being as cruel and evil as they want/need to be towards me and those who aren’t part of the group.

tbf a large majority of those delegates are just normal people who volunteer for their local parties in some way. Like I could have been a delegate this year if I wanted it for for it because I’m on the RD committee for my state house district. So they’re not exactly all super elite haha

Hasan continuing to hit home runs in this coverage

"After 4 days at the DNC I feel like I am the only motherfucker that actually hates Republicans. Democrats will say 'well I guess you want Trump to win then', but then invite Republicans to join their party. They'll let Republicans speak at their convention. They want to hug Republicans, they want to fuck Republicans, they want to BE Republicans"

I’m not making a comment on being elite. I’m talking about how many Americans, as left or evolved as they paint themselves to be, can still tap into the cruelty and violence of white supremacy anytime they want to and aim it at whomever they please. I look/present as white so it happens vary rarely to me but I’ve still experienced the unspoken, difficult to put into words, sinister vibes when a person decides you are a problem because you’re not part of the in-group, whether it’s racial or class-based or any other affiliation, and they let you know your place and their power. Seeing how unconcerned those folks were with showing their contempt towards the protestors was a lizard-brain flex of white supremacy and power, whether those individual people are literally in positions of power or even literally white. They were saying “you’re not wanted here/you don’t belong here/I don’t have to pretend to tolerate you” which is absolutely steeped in US white supremacy.

Honestly, the more I think about it, gay marriage perfectly encapsulates how the democratic party works.

In 2008, Obama didn't support gay marriage. Prop 8 passed in California with 52% of the vote. The dems are not a stalwart of LGBTQ+ rights. That is a pretty recent develop, that only came about when defending LGBTQ+ rights became popular. They are opportunists. Defending LGBTQ+ rights doesn't come from a place of morality, it comes from a place of it being a popular position that helps dems win.

This is why they'll talk out of both sides of their mouth re: palestine. The kids want Itchy and Scratchy to deal with real life problems you deal with every day, but they also want Itchy and Scratchy to get into far out situations involving robots and magic powers. So that is what the dems want. It doesn't matter that "End the suffering in Gaza" is incompatible with "Keep arming Israel" -- both of those are popular opinions so they'll try to embrace both.

This is also why they'll shift to the center and even past that to the right in order to chance Republican votes. They have no actual principles, all they have is the desire to go "what will get us the most votes"

And now the left is stuck in a bind. If they don't vote, you get Trump, and that is still worse. If you do vote, you show the strategy works.

This is why the dems ultimately love running against Trump. They couldn't pull this shit against Romney or McCain. They'd have to actually try and earn votes on the left. But here they are free to fully set up shop in the center. If they lose, no big deal they are rich and powerful enough to survive a Trump presidency and it'll be the fault of everyone on the left who didn't vote for them. Plus like, while they can probably survive a Trump presidency not everyone can so everyone is still gonna have to fucking vote for them (I say as someone who is gonna have to fucking vote for them). And once enough people vote for them, they win, and then great they won and ultimately that is all that matters to them

tl:dr its astounding how just 24 hours of political messaging can switch me from going "man I feel more excited about voting for Tim Walz than I have about almost any political ever" (I was unfortunately still a dumb conservative kid back in the Obama days wasn't really until his second term that I was able to shake all that) to "fuck this party why did I just give you my money I'm still gonna vote for you cause fuck Trump but I'm not gonna be happy while doing it"

I think maybe for a bit we can just stop using “tbf” in response to anyone’s posts about Israel and Palestine.

Just a bananas bananas insane response to a valid and upsetting post.

    Powerful image right there.

I'm sorry y'all a d I know most of you don't want to hear or admit but she did great. She wasn't talking to me. She wasn't talking to you. Because most of us are already locked in on whether or not we're voting for her. She needed to appeal to ALL of America, the people that don't know her, the people that get their news from Fox News, the people who get their news from sound bites, she needed to say stuff for THEM to hear. Unfortunately it was very right leaning but she needed to appeal to more than just democrats because she was speaking to more than just democrats. The independents, the republicans who aren't fully sold on Trump, she had to say the right stuff to get them interested in her. MAGA can't even say she gave a speech and "appeared weak" because she said the right stuff. Fox can't say she's anti police or anti military. I'm definitely not a fan of how she talked about immigration but guess what? A LOT of Americans are, and that'll appeal to them. She went for big tent. And once she's in then she can implement left leaning policies. She's just gotta get there and with her speech tonight it's looking even better.

And once again I know I have to explain to some people here who can't think big picture: this is not me justifying anything or even agreeing with what she said. Hell I disagree with most of it. This is not me saying what she said is right. But like I said she wasn't talking to me. She was talking to the people they're hoping to pull from Trump. Did I like seeing cops and Republicans up there speaking? Hell no. But you know who that may interest and prove to she's not a liberal boogeyman like she's been called? Potential voters. And before you say "oh that's gonna scare off or lose voters", I'd say that most of these people are smart and realize what she's doing (which I described above) or realize that even if they're turned off, what's the alternative? Trump? Yeah no thanks. She's not THAT bad. And people realize that.

This was strategically written and targeted to those people. The people who don't spend all day online discussing and scrutinizing politics. And I believe it'll pay off. And if it doesn't I'll be the first to admit it was all hopium and I was an idiot.

Yeah I think the speech was def mostly targeted at people on the right/in the center who are on the fence about Trump; not one meant to evoke the real issues/policies most on the left care about. It was a speech meant to get her the election. For sure not the speech we wanted to hear, but I get why she constructed it the way she did. I have relatives in southern/rural Minnesota, who are def right leaning on many popular/usual Republican issues, who this message is kinda targeted towards, and I can def see them potentially coming around to her.

If Kamala does get elected she might have the largest grassroots left wing opposition to her administration for a Democrat since probably LBJ.
