    The intrusive whisper fascinates me

Kinda weird that the info on a show being moved and a show being cancelled is buried deep in that statement. You think they'd need to make a separate post about that…

I wish more bands I wanted to see played at Woodward Park, I saw Deftones there.

Festivals really are the way to go when it comes to a cost vs value approach.

Between Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Portlola I’ll have been able to see pretty much every pop, indie, electronic act I want to see in a given year. Costs me about $5k to do all three of them with travel from NY.

Got to see 45 acts between Bonnaroo and Coachella this year.

On paper yeah festivals are more bang for your buck, but for most its much more convenient and cheaper to spend $100+ on a headline show in town for a couple hours one evening than to arrange child care, pet boarding, use PTO, arrange travel, and just be out of pocket for 3-4 days for a fest. And even if you can manage those things, it then becomes just as difficult to find one or two friends who are willing to do the same lol

But damn I miss those festival years. One summer I went to Bonnaroo, Governor's Ball and Made in America. Spent maybe $700 total on tickets and hardly anything on lodging, and probably saw just as many acts as I have in the 10 years since.

those made in america lineups were so damn good before the made the pivot to a r&b/hip hop exclusive event

it def gets tougher to keep the festival crew around as you get older, my roo crew went from 22 to 10 over 14 years. Luckily most of my remaining crew is queer and kids just aren’t in the plans for most of us so that eliminates a major obstacle of travel in your 30s.

Going to festivals alone isn't very cost-effective. But the few times I've done it... I'd be lying if I said I didn't find it to be about as much fun in a fully different way.

Traveling super far distances by yourself solely to do everything exactly as you want to is also a WONDERFUL thing

Seeing The National play to a sea of Kanye fans at MIA was certainly something.

    idk man

I was able to get through Lolla this year for less than $500 and that might be one of my crowning achievements. Someday I would love to get a group together to pull up either to that or something like Desert Daze.

the first year Beyoncé headlined was really bad for the crowd up front. The stans had been there all day and had the first 40-50ft from the barrier locked down.

Phoenix was playing right before her and they all literally sat down on the ground. This caused some people to think they could move up into that area since all those people up front were sitting.

the amount of fights during that Phoenix set was wild, saw a couple girls goto town on a dude they said stepped on their purse on the ground.

I live in southern california so I never really have to travel or get hotels for fests. I’ve been going to more each year and skipping out on bands that I know will end up at a fest

My main thing with festivals has come down to full set vs. short set. I've only been to Adjacent, so it's not my main way to dive in, but I mostly see bands I'd rather see full 60-90 minute sets from, along with bands who have smaller catalogs as support/doing cheap enough shows in DC or Baltimore to make it worthwhile.

Doesn't hurt that DC only has a few nearby festivals (All Things Go, Broccoli City) now that Firefly is done. Can't imagine what it's like in Chicago, where most bands I'd want to see would never play their own shows because of Riot/Pitchfork/Lolla

I’m still so bummed Adjacent didn’t happen this year. I really hope it comes back sometime

didn’t it sell kind of poorly? I thought I remember someone saying they only sold 20k of the 45k they had alotted.

AC is a weird spot for festivals, the lodging prices in the summer are more than most major metros.

Just yesterday I was revisiting the Adjacent lineup & reminiscing, it's hard to curate a lineup like that that appeals to so many people & works for everyone. What a blast, I hope they do it again too

Not sure. I only went the day blink played and it seemed like there was a pretty large crowd so I’d be be very surprised if there were only 20k across the whole weekend, but I definitely think it underperformed a little relative to their expectations.

HA YES I was there for that. And I also think earlier in the day City & Colour played on the main stage to about 50 people.

I was sooo bummed to miss Adjacent last year, that lineup was perfect. Their biggest fault was having it over Memorial Day weekend when 1) most people already have plans, and 2) hotel prices are through the roof.

Really wish they'd bring it back. Keep it on the beach in AC, but move it to the weekend before or after Riot Fest, so they can catch most of those acts as they travel west.

It is when you’re dumb as shit lol. I’ve lived on 1.5 meals a day and slept on a stranger’s couch and in my car in airport parking garages (several times) to go to fests by myself.

Lucky! So many bands stick to playing LA or San Diego when coming to California and ignoring the rest of the state

I don't know that that's "stupid" so much as just... Braver than most people would ever be? Hah.

But even then: The gas to get to that parking garage could have been split if you had a travel companion. So the point still stands. LOL
