Some pictures of what US soldiers were doing to children in Vietnam went a long way in sparking public outrage about the war

There has to be a way to effectively message this to get people onboard with fighting plastic as a health emergency

idk man people are willingly getting covid over and over again and not taking any precautions to stop it when it could be as simple as wear a mask when in public. Now you’re talking about getting people to pay a little more money for packaging that isn’t plastic on all their food and all the rest. People just seem to think none of this will impact them. Sigh.

Do a lot of folks in here still wear masks?

No judgement, just curious. I mainly only wear them in crowded healthcare settings and pharmacies

Indoor places, such as museums, stores, churches, yeah.

outdoors? Not so much. Whole family has not gotten COVID yet (that we know of)

yeah especially if I'm somewhere crowded like a show or the movies and for most stores except sometimes if I'm just grabbing something quick

Yeah that’s the thing you have to show people that it does impact them. Science is such a slow process but we already have connections to cancer and now dementia. The problem is causation takes a long time to prove but if you could get people to link the dementia they see in their parents or grandparents to plastics it will terrify them to be exposed to it. If only policy in this country operated more on the precautionary principle.

Oh I probably should have added that I have no social life and get curbside groceries lol.

I wish I could get myself to wear one at work, but 8-9 hours straight is just too much for me

Answer is mostly, yes. Like right now with the surge going on, we're at more or less full precautions--masks anywhere indoors in public, only doing curbside if we're doing take out, grocery store later at night (which I frankly don't think i'll ever change, it's so much more relaxing shopping at night), etc. We've been back at work this week for start of the year meetings and nonsense and we're masking the whole time. The numbers here are as high as they were in February this past winter, it's a full on surge, not hte smaller summer ones we've had before.

After I got covid in early march, I basically dropped the mask for the rest of the school year as the odds of me getting infected were way low. but also still wasn't really doing crowded indoor spots lol

We just were at a TBS show at a bar that is half indoors/half outdoors last weekend, we got a spot on the outside and once the place started filling up, we put masks on.

I've been spending more time the last 6 months trying to research masks for the right combo on comfort, breathability, and protection. Breathteq masks were what I settled on and we like them so far. I bought a little tool to put tighteners on the ear loops for a better fit. Also been researching air purifiers for my classroom, trying to see if I can find something that's better than what I currently have.

This is pretty close to what we've been doing, but def being a bit more militant about it now because my wife is pregnant, (and because of what happened with my heart in May which still has no resolution). MFM doc just the other day told her yes avoid covid as much as possible, infection increases risk of still birth and etc, even used the words "lifestyle change". I like him, he's the first doctor outside of my PCP that seems to still be taking it more seriously than the general way people are acting about it. All of this is complicated by my son who is going into kindergarten next week and will be in a classroom that will have two teachers and 26-27 kids. And in a building that doesn't seem like it'll be well ventilated. So we're really nervous. He's pretty good about wearing masks but he's still 5 and obviously has to take it off to eat lunch and etc. He doesn't handle respiratory viruses well. It's...a really fucking stressful time.

I am saying that the rationalization of it, as a genocide (which it is) is being met with the fervor that the pro life movement makes.

I am saying that the incredulity you espouse is the same incredulity espoused by pro life persons who, looking at others who share their view on the definition of personhood but who advocate for tempered tones, understanding audience, view them with disdain for “capitulating”.

and I can respect that! I can respect that level of absolutistism.

hell, I have never voted major party because I am also unwilling to bend the knee to either party which is damn near the same.

but you want to make a statement? Say your undecided vote will go with Jill Stein, or with the *gasp* Democrats for Life or Solidarty Party as quoted above, which actually have the stance you want on Gaza. Because if that is the redline for you, then let them know where your vote is going, vs not voting at all.

I am saying both demonize others who view their respective position with degrees of prudence, and that doing so, without giving concrete political consequences is virtue signaling.

If a position is truly existential to you, don’t merely state you are undecided; find a candidate who supports your view, and state, “if you do not do X, I will vote for Y” in this case Stein, or the ASP candidate (or any number of 3rd party candidates with an agreeable take on Gaza)

how about this (and I know it is hypothetical and we can’t trust him and he’s awful, yadda yadda yadda…): state, “if Trump and republicans support a ceasefire and actively work for it I will vote for them over you.”

you want to get attention? There you go.

That people have internalized the notion that voting is the only meaningful form of political action is in large part why we are in the mess we are in.
