This fills me with an uncomfortable level of rage on top of being deeply triggering. Purity rings were a constant in purity culture growing up (my sisters had them, my wife had one, female friends in youth group had them, etc.), but have you all heard of purity balls?

That might sound a lot more interesting than it actually is.

Purity balls were these big dance events that fathers and daughters would get all dressed up for (where the father dresses in a tux and the daughter...typically wears a white dress..............) and the fathers get up in front of everyone and make speeches about maintaining their daughter's "purity" and then the daughter gets up and makes their "vow" to their father to remain "pure" until marriage. And they walk down the aisle and dance, etc.

This was also something I grew up with.

That sounds familiar so I think that's what it was, yeah. These dances were a huge thing back then in the fundiegelical circles my family ran in. Just...it's gross! I find myself walking in circles around the house a lot when I'm having spiraling thoughts. When I was like 14 my pastor set up this archway at the front of the sanctuary that was all covered in flowers like a wedding altar and had all of us kids/teens walk under it to make a public pledge for purity.

I am surprised that Walz's dry humor did not resonate with Ben.

Somewhat related, I was at the work colleague’s wedding, and they had a religious ceremony where family members gave religious speeches and they were all about wishing the guy an adventurous life of wonder and excitement and challenges and rewards and accomplishment and wishing his wife a life of supporting him as he does those things.

As a man, I see the appeal of being the main character who owns everyone/the baby that everyone must take care of but, as a human being who actually likes my family and friends and views them as human beings, this kind of stuff is really fucked up and weird and creepy.

I feel like the current CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald being the other co-chair is the bigger deal. I think he was one of the inspirations for Bobby Axelrod in Billions so that tracks.

Oh yeah, this was basically the sermon and series of speeches I heard at every wedding growing up. Even at my own wedding twelve years ago there were shades of this coming from the pastor in his sermon. I was still in the thick of deconstructing - constantly confused and at war with myself at the time - and my wife was at a stage where she knew there were some strange things around the edges of the faith system we grew up with but wasn't quite ready to leave it behind entirely like we both have now. So looking back, we both wish that's something we could change about our wedding ceremony. One of my friends brought that up to me recently as he was a groomsman and he was pretty uncomfortable with that whole thing and wanted to pick my brain about it because of where I'm at in my personal life now. The patriarchal/misogynistic indoctrination of it all is so obvious on its face when you step back from it and looking back can feel really awful. Thankfully my own vows to my wife on our wedding day were about how much I have loved her at every stage of her life and how we'll work together as a team so at least I've got that.

When it was looking bleak on Election Night 2016, my wife said “If he wins, we are going to Del Taco.”

We ate a shit ton of Del Taco that night.

The only thing we had like this at our wedding was my FIL insisted on "giving away" my wife and I wanted to push back on it but my in-laws were paying for the wedding so we let it go.

But we made sure the officiant (he was a non-denominational pastor, but also did secular ceremonies and neither of us are religious) didn't use any language that referred to marriage as being between a man and a woman or other heteropatriarchal things (like the woman's job being to support the man, etc.)
