Yeah, this, except replace pop-punk with nu-metal and post-grunge. But I check out new stuff on the daily.

I know there's a reason for the stereotype but we also don't have to pretend everyone is stuck living in the decade they were born either.

Is it a theory though? That's just what happens to most people, you just don't have the time you used to.

My comment is what an organic list of “what I’ve been listening to” would look like if someone did it themselves without the pretense of it being public content for their brand. It’s not a comment on people not listening to new music. Most people listen to new music alongside their favorite music and the latter gets more casual listens, IMO, unless you run a music rec Substack or you are listening to new music as a self-education goal/non-casual purpose.

I think my parents would recognize the band names blink-182, Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, and maybe Yellowcard because I never shut up about them. But if I played them a song from any of them, they wouldn't know which song came from which band.

My biggest fear the past five years or so has been that I will stop finding enjoyment in new music. If that ever happens I think I’ll have an actual identity crisis.

I don’t mind being in the office sometimes but I hate when I do go in and no one else is there! Wasting my time.

I'm 42 and a half and have the opposite experience lol. I often have to consciously go back and dig through old stuff I used to love (much of which I don't really even like anymore) and tend to gravitate toward newer music.

When we are around 40 we also have to disclose what newer music means. Because I often find myself considering 10 year old songs as “new” before I do the math.

For me, it's stuff that came out this week/month/year/decade that makes up the bulk of my listening.

I still reach for some older stuff, but even that is mostly within the past 8-10 years, and around anniversaries or certain seasons I will reach for old favorites from 15-20 years ago, but there are comparatively very few albums from my high school days or earlier that I'm still listening to with any regularity.

I haven't listened to any new music since LFO released their self-titled album in late summer of 1999

I listen to new music all the time from the long list of artists that I already like, but looking at my list of saved 2024 albums there are very few from artists that I didn’t already know before this year

Same but it feels like a fluke year, like in the past few years there have been a lot of new ones for me like Chappell and Wet Leg

I definitely listen to newer music over a lot of what I grew up listening to if I had to be honest about it, them Gen Z kids can make some dope tunes.
