after the Tyreek new contract, Miami has like $36 million in cap space for some reason lmao go get me Simmons and another IOL

(they will carry most of that over to next year when they are slated to be way over, but still)

Eagles 53-Man Roster Prediction - Training Camp Edition

Quarterback (3)
Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett, Tanner McKee

Out:
Will Grier

Hurts, by all accounts, has been having a good training camp where he’s been getting rid of the ball quickly, making sharp decisions, and is looking more spry as a runner than he did last season. Vibes are up in that department. Pickett will mostly likely be the backup, but I’ve heard/read mixed things about his training camp so far. Couple that with McKee getting more second team reps lately and there’s a non-zero percent chance there’s a backup QB competition here. Grier is just a camp body.

Running Back (3)
Saquon Barkley, Kenny Gainwell, Will Shipley

Out:
Tyrion Davis-Price, Lew Nichole, Kendall Milton

Barkley is the no-brainer starter, but I don’t get the sense he’s going to be utilized purely as a workhorse RB that regularly plays around 75% of the snaps. Gainwell has had a role in the offense for years now and I expect him to still be utilized in a change of pace role. His continued work with the first team indicates he will still have a role on offense. I expect a 65/35 split between Barkley and Gainwell. I’ve heard positive things about Shipley, particularly as a receiver, but I don’t expect him to have much of a role barring an injury to Barkley or Gainwell. The rest of the guys are just camp bodies.

Wide Receiver (6)
A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Parris Campbell, Johnny Wilson, Britain Covey, Ainias Smith

Out:
John Ross, Joseph Ngata, Shaquan Davis, Jacob Harris, Austin Watkins, Griffen Hebert

Brown and DeVonta make up what I believe is the second best WR duo in the league. The depth behind them is concerning though. Campbell emerged as the early favorite to be the WR3, but he’s missed the last two practices with a groin injury. Wilson has increasingly gotten more and more reps with the ones and has looked good with those opportunities. I think he would have the biggest impact on the offense if he were to pan out, as he can serve as the X receiver, which would allow the team the freedom to move Brown and DeVonta around more. Covey has been making the most of his opportunities and, given his role as the team’s primary punt returner the last two years, I think he’s got a good shot to make the roster. I have Ainias making the roster, but I’ve heard he’s looked bad during OTAs, minicamp, and now training camp. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ross makes the roster over him (he’s actually gotten reps with the ones), but, for now, I’m leaning in favor of a rookie draft pick whom the team valued highly in the draft. The rest of the depth chart is just camp bodies. The team could stand to add somebody here.

Tight End (3)
Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra, C.J. Uzomah

Out:
Albert Okwuegbunam, E.J. Jenkins, Kevin Foelsch

This depth chart is pretty straightforward. I think Goedert is one of the most underrated TEs in the league. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do in Kellen Moore’s offense. Calcaterra is the runaway favorite right now for the TE2 job. Hopefully his blocking has improved, but he’s been spoken about as if he is the TE2 and the team’s actions have followed suit in the opportunities given to him in camp so far. I have Uzomah making the roster so the Eagles have a backup TE who is more of a blocker, but I can definitely see them cutting him and bringing him back onto the practice squad so that they don’t have to guarantee his contract for the season. Jenkins could push Uzomah for a roster spot, as I’ve actually heard positive things about Jenkins in both OTAs and now training camp. The others are camp bodies.

Offensive Line (10)
Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, Lane Johnson, Mekhi Becton, Trevor Keegan, Dylan McMahon, Brett Toth, Fred Johnson

Out:
Matt Hennessy, Darian Kinnard, Anim Dankwah, Max Scharping, Nick Gates, Laekin Vakalahi

Most of the starting OL is set in stone. There is a legit camp battle at RG between Steen and Becton. Steen has missed a good amount of time due to an ankle injury, but returned to limited work today. Becton has been up and down in his guard reps, which he’s gotten more of than he has as a tackle. I’m currently giving Steen the nod as the starter, but I won’t be surprised if Becton wins it prior to week one or eventually wins the job in season. Keegan and McMahon have been looking solid and should make the roster given their rookie contracts. I don’t understand this team’s infatuation with Toth. I had Hennessy making the roster over him for a while now, but Toth has actually gotten first team reps at both center and RG, while Hennessy has been stuck on the second team. Fred Johnson gives the team tackle depth, but he’s far from a lock to make the roster again. I think the rest of the depth chart are just camp bodies, but I’m keeping an eye and/or ear out for Kinnard and Dankwah as long shots who could possibly make the roster.

Defensive Tackle (5)
Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Milton Williams, Marlon Tuipulotu, Moro Ojomo

Out:
Thomas Booker, PJ Mustipher, Gabe Hall

Carter has a chance to emerge as one of the best DTs in the league so long as he can stay on the straight and narrow and also show that he can play good ball for more than half a season. Davis, meanwhile, needs to prove he can look decent for longer than a month. There’s a lot riding on Davis this season. I’m actually curious if Williams can overtake Davis for the DT2 job. Williams has legit been the better player over the last two seasons and Vic Fangio apparently loves him. Breakout season incoming? Let’s hope. Tuipulotu and Ojomo provide depth, while the rest of the guys are just camp bodies.

Edge Rusher (5)
Bryce Huff, Josh Sweat, Nolan Smith, Brandon Graham, Jalyx Hunt

Out:
Julian Okwara, Patrick Johnson, Terrell Lewis, Tarron Jackson

I feel cautiously optimistic about Huff and Sweat as the primary edge rushers here, but Huff has some big shoes to fill replacing Haason Reddick and Sweat needs a bounce-back season in the worst way possible. I also have some concerns about how well Sweat’s game will translate in Fangio’s scheme. Is Nolan Smith good at football? Curious that that’s a question that needs to be asked about a supposed dawg, but here we are. The Eagles need him to actually make an impact this year as a rotational rusher who could potentially overtake Sweat if he’s actually any good. Graham will continue to be productive in a rotational role and I’m actually interested in seeing what Hunt can provide after hearing some positive reports about him from camp. The rest of the depth chart is just camp bodies who are long shots to make the roster.

Linebacker (5)
Devin White, Zack Baun, Nakobe Dean, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Ben VanSumeran

Out:
Oren Burks, Brandon Smith, Shaquille Quarterman

Disgusting. I’ve been hearing some positive things about both White and Baun, but we’ll see how good they are when the games actually matter. Dean appears likely for a rotational/backup role at this point after Fangio pointed out that he was having a good camp until open practice last Thursday. Baun has consistently been getting more first team reps alongside White than Dean has too. Even Trotter has gotten some first team reps. I’m sure the LB2 position is going to be a revolving door this season. I have VanSumeran making the roster for his special teams contributions. Burks can’t make the club in the tub and the other guys are camp bodies.

Cornerback (6)
Darius Slay, Kelee Ringo, Quinyon Mitchell, Isaiah Rodgers, Avonte Maddox, Cooper DeJean

Out:
Eli Ricks, Tyler Hall, Josh Jobe, Zech McPhearson, Mekhi Garner, Shon Stephens, Parry Nickerson

Slay has one of the starting outside corner jobs locked down. The competition for the other outside corner job right now seems to be between Ringo and Rodgers. While Rodgers has gotten more starts with the first team defense than Ringo has, I’ve heard Ringo has played more reps with the first team overall than Rodgers has so I’m leaning toward Ringo for the job, but it feels like a coin flip. Mitchell has been getting first team work lately as a slot corner. Could he factor into the outside corner competition? Certainly, but he’s in the slot for now. Maddox serves as depth at both slot corner and safety while DeJean is buried on the depth chart due to his current hamstring injury. I could see the team carry a seventh corner between Ricks (longer contract, some first team reps), Hall (slot corner depth), or Jobe (special teams gunner), but any of the three would be a long shot to make it. The rest are camp bodies.

Safety (4)
C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Reed Blankenship, James Bradberry, Sydney Brown

Out:
Tristin McCollum, Andre’ Sam

I’m cautiously optimistic about CJGJ and Blankenship as the starters, but now CJGJ is dealing with an injury. Considering that Brown is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in January, Bradberry is now a de facto starting safety. Feels bad man. Can this team just sign Justin Simmons and reunite him with both Fangio and Christian Parker? Could they claim Caden Sterns, whom the Broncos waived earlier today, off waivers? I don’t know, but their depth at safety is problematic regardless of what Bradberry and Maddox can provide them. McCollum and Sam ain’t it either.

my takeaways from Miami camp so far:

- the white legend Ethan Bonner is gonna make the team. Cam Smith got hurt and Bonner has looked great apparently.
- I think that it sounds like Jaelan Phillips is going to somehow play week 1. Dude is insane. He tore his Achilles thanksgiving weekend.
- Jonnu Smith is gonna be involved way more than people probably think.
- Chop Robinson is gonna be really good.

This is mine right now (green = locks, blue = all but locks, yellow = bubble guys, orange = wrong side of the bubble guys, red = camp bodies/maybe PS)

Notes:
- safety is real rough behind Blackmon in terms of starting caliber players (please come through for me, Allbright)
- OL has 11 who could reasonably be on someone’s 53 man roster — could be a thing to trade from
- ditto for CB and TE to a lesser extent as other areas of depth that other teams might want
- I’d imagine anyone with any semblance of use who has a multi-week injury gets thrown on IR with the new rules where you can be eligible for return without being on the post-cutdown roster, so there’s probably 3-5 more guys in orange who find their way on the roster somehow
