Honestly at this point i kinda miss the snob music nerd pitchfork era. Not as much as i miss better versions of that (Cokemachineglow especially), but I think the poptimism thing that music trended towards at the end of the 00s has been an over correction.

Heard someone say that reading a book well, or listening to an album well, etc. is a form of art in its own way, and I like that idea. Tons of music critics suck, but good music criticism also helped me better understand the music i like and better understand my issues with the music i didn’t.

 

I also have opinions on YouTube critics

Not in my opinion. I find most of it obvious engagement bait, nothing that explains why something is “good,” but more importantly I don’t think many put it into context with other music, the artists history, genre history, or why it connects with them or will other people. Just a different kind of thing that I don’t find particularly interesting or entertaining. The argument that traditional music critics died when we can have infinite access to music I think is compelling, but my favorite writers always made it personal and explained how the music resonated with them. And imo a lot of that is what we miss out on now.

Idk if reading a book or listening to music etc “well” is an art per se but it’s certainly a skill as is the ability to write that down with a compelling voice that goes beyond surface level descriptions

the only good reviews on YouTube are video game reviews (skill up is top dog imo) because the medium lends itself better to the format because showing gameplay along side in depth analysis gets the point across better

Nancy Pelosi could come to my house with a $1,000,000 check and I’d still dislike her and view her as partially responsible for a lot of the problems in the country. I genuinely couldn’t care less that she and I want the same VP Candidate or both reached the obvious conclusion that Joe had to go.
