Vice presidential picks: How much do they matter?

Not sure if that was a serious question or not lol but this is a decent article talking about it. The short answer: not actually a whole lot

they really going to fucking go with Shapiro? and not realize how much of a disaster that would be for the momentum Harris currently has?

The momentum is coming from 'she's not Biden' and from people who aren't political junkies. The majority of people will see the name Josh Shaprio, google the name Josh Shapiro, and get their information from there. Some of them will accidently stumble upon Ben Shapiro and it'll be horrible for them.

Obviously I agree that Shapiro would not be a good pick and is the worst option out of what she is considering, but I think people are severely overestimating how bad it would be for the campaign. The average voter probably doesn't even know much at all about Shapiro or have heard him speak, so he has the opportunity to make a good first impression on a lot of voters, something JD Vance has horribly failed to do. I think there will probably be a lot of praise from the media if she picks Shapiro.

maybe. idk. I think there are a lot of people who got turned off to Biden given what he's done and said about Gaza. And sure, Harris's position is more or less the same but being not Biden + not actively focusing on it, its not as big of an issue.

But picking someone whose taken a firm stance in demonizing protestors... now you've shifted focus back to the topic and made it an issue again and there goes a lot of votes.

I definitely could be too online. But people said the "Biden needs to dropout" folks were also too online and turns out that was clearly the right move. So I do think there is a clear worry that this move is going to backfire badly

you could very well be right! The problem, though, is that if they win he represents a continuation of the worst of Biden’s policies and likely a rightward shift on labor, which is not a victory I would cheer on

Sometimes it feels like Democrats view an ignited base as a negative liability. Choosing a VP fresh off a SA scandal and removing their moral high ground to hammer any opponents who are/defend sex creeps feels like a move to make the base heel.

    Not newbie, I think Supporter

I think the vocal minority that cares about Palestine will be livid. I also think the average voter, certainly the middle ten percent voter doesn't care. I know how sickening that is, and how much flak I get here. But the average voter doesn't care. Shapiro will be fine for her, but still a terrible choice from the options available. But seriously, if Palestine is your large issue, maybe you stay home, but you're not voting for Trump. I just hate that it kills some youth enthusiasm.

And of course, we need to force Israel's hand to end the war and adjust its attitude. This doesn't do that.

I've never seen the Democrats really try to push progressivism, and it's disappointing.

Is Kamala REALLY Black though? I can't wait to hear Trump to say he REALLY means by this. Woo.

I do think it's important to say that this was also not totally sourced. We don't know that he is the nominee yet, and I hesitate to believe it until some more major outlets are saying the same thing. They are a lot more plugged in than anyone.

The other fear about him is that the VP tends to be thought of as 'next person up'. I know a lot of VPs don't get elected president, but the view is they are leading the charge of the next generation of party members; and even if the party takes a turn toward being more center-right on border issues, having someone who is anti-corporate tax hikes is a bad choice for someone who is supposed to be leading the next wave of dems. Especially since a lot of democrats have seemingly figured out how to thread the needle and appeal to midwesterners.
