I saw them back in the UFOF/Two Hands period and they were pretty solid but nothing to write home about.

saw them before masterpiece came out and it was transcendental. Saw them twice on dragon tour and both times were also great but the (blue) lightning was somewhat outta the bottle by then

I saw them last year and it was pretty disappointing. Adrienne forgot lyrics a couple times and she had them restart songs a couple times, one of them when they were already half way through it. Was just a strange performance.

i feel like the restarting songs things has been a pretty common complaint

Opening a set with 7/8 straight new songs and a new lineup is the most Big Thief shit ever. Love it.

    A festival set no less!

I do love this approach. Not entirely different than say Animal Collective, who I (kind of) saw open for Big Thief at Pitchfork a few years ago. If you condition your audience to expect the unexpected you never have to get stuck “playing the hits” the rest of your career. It’s a sign of a confident band imo.

obviously you have to have the back catalogue, deep cuts and exciting new material to do it but you know.

Imagine going to that set solely to see them play “Vampire Empire”. Surprise.

absolutely love the energy and the amount of new songs. here are clips of all of them

second drummer is Jon Nellen from Adrianne's college-era band. he's one half of ginla and has a solo project.
bassist is Justin Felton who plays with L'Rain and also releases music as Strugglin'

excited to see whether these two also join the european tour and how many other new songs get played

  17. almost all of these sound better than almost all the unreleased new ones they were playing last year imo

I agree for the most part, some of the new ones sound amazing but some are a bit more standard

Adrianne played 4 of these new songs at Newport Folk Festival two days earlier. There's a full recording of that set up on dime. Also at least 2 people are planning to record shows in August

The other exciting aspect of all this is we have no idea what studio tricks they will bring to each of these cuts. They are a great live band, but sometimes I think they’re an even better studio band. Always experimenting, the stark difference between songs like “Time Escaping” and “Dragon” highlights this. Truly don’t know what I’m gonna get when I hit play on a studio cut.

  20. Gonna have to politely disagree with just a tiny bit of that: while they're undoubtedly a great studio band, I still find some of the studio versions of songs from Dragon a little lacking compared to contemporaneous live cuts of the same songs.

Then there are others like Little Things or Flower of Blood where yeah, you're right, it's never gonna sound quite that huge live. Am I just arguing with myself? Who's to say!!
