They should add another year onto high school where you just work at a high volume restaurant, you get to choose front of house or back of house but it has to be one or the other otherwise you won’t graduate. Society would be a lot better.

I watched someone tip my trainer 0 dollars on a 120 dollar check at the fucking f*ur s*asons hotel today society is cooked (it didn’t matter because she had a 15 top that spent 1400 dollars from Nestle and people tip like crazy with the company credit card. Also a few people higher up from the ritz Carlton were dining with us because they like our service better lol I saw that black Amex and went fuuuuuck)

My mom had me when she was very young and she raised me and my siblings from the money she made as a server. She also tips higher than anyone I’ve ever met so it’s been implanted in me that, if you’re doing OK and you have the money, those extra five dollars are worth more with your server then just going back into your wallet. When I stumble upon anti-tippers on Reddit every so often or read about people talking about servers In an adversarial tone, it reads as very antisocial and creepy to me.

If I feel good about myself for any reason, I am a pretty good tipper. I never tip less than 30%. If I’m having a week or two where I’m too broke to leave a good tip, I don’t go out to eat. Chicago is pretty good about adding gratuity to bills on top of that, too.

On a related note about people being weird in America: my wife has a childhood friend who is a server, and a very weird thing is going out with her and watching her be a real dick to other servers. I’ve been out with her well over a dozen times and she never hasn’t been kind of a jerk. Feels like she’s misplacing some anger based off how they’ve been treated by customers themselves. Like “oh sick, now is my turn to be a tyrant.” We’ve recently decided we can’t go out with her anymore. It’s very different than most of our friends who work in the service industry, who have a real sense of solidarity.

Third thought on the service industry: we went to Portugal for vacation earlier this year, and one thing i read online was so many people being like “we loved it here but ugghh the servers take so long to bring you your check” and turns out that the custom there is for them to wait for you to ask for the check. Just feels like it’s probably a uniquely American thing to expect that you’ll get pampered and have all yours needs anticipated.

If I'm at a place where I am a regular and I know the bartenders on a first name basis I sometimes tip 45-50%. I also help stack chairs and clean up garbage outside when it's close to last call. Bartenders love me.

I have been to Monteverde once and it is a straight ripper. Been trying to go back, but in my limited experience of trying to make a reservation as soon as the booking window opens, it fills up fast
