This feels genuinely exciting. I'm no fan of Kamala by any means but I have infinitely more hope now than I did yesterday

this is why nobody thought Joe Biden would drop out today

Thinking about it I don't think we have had a presumptive Dem nominee that has had the potential to feel this fresh and exciting since Obama 2008. Even if she is 1/4th as electrifying as 2008 Obama campaign was I still think that is significantly better than what have had from Dem presidential campaigns since and it'll be enough to beat Trump.

Obama 2012 most were already sick of Obama and I dont think many people gave a shit. Hillary 2016 was an utter disaster of uncharismatic unlikablilty. Biden 2020 was more about people fired up to beat Trump than about Biden himself.

You missed the political assassination stuff

Really though the conditions of '68 were completely different. Half of white Democrats aren't ready to bolt and switch sides because they feel alienated by the DNC's civil rights reform lol

John Oliver was EXCELLENT this week. Immigration and the bullshit surrounding it is by far my biggest hot button issue and he took it to fucking task. Plus, Oliver overall lately has been hilarious. The clip he showed of the world games from the 90s of the bell hops waving goodbye to a frog being pulled away by ghosts is gold.

I’m not an expert on KH and from what I do know of her politics I don’t think she’s thaaat exciting, but it’s unbelievably refreshing to see the Democratic Party do something:

    a. quickly and with strategic timing
    b. that’s theoretically risky but clearly people wanted
    c. that has a fighting chance of getting people under 30 or even 25 invested

I’m sure some would point to the coordinated primary dropout in 2020 as an example, but that really only passes muster for A to me as it was a big slap in the face of progressive hopes. I wasn’t a Biden hater at the time, but it was a boring and insulting and safe move.

Anyways that’s why I’m hopeful today and why I agree this feels different than things have with an official nominee in a long while. There will be things over the next few months that are frustrating and plenty more over the next 4 years if she wins, but to see the clown show of the past month about face so abruptly is inspiring.

Obama’s massive popularity in 08 grew bottom-up based on his charisma and political skills. This is entirely top-down driven. The Dems painted themselves into a corner and now they and the media are going full throttle into telling you how excited you should be, but Harris has done zero to generate any organic popularity. Feels totally different to me.

I agree with this in that Harris isn’t Obama and this isn’t 2008. I think calling the excitement of the past day media generated isn’t giving the moment quite enough credit, though. People are actually excited from those I’ve talked to and what I’ve seen elsewhere. It’s just that they’re excited because they wanted a bad situation to change and it did, not because Harris is a particularly inspiring candidate. (Though I think the palpable excitement around her being Not Old is important and its own thing.)

Agree. Wasn’t referring to the excitement being media-generated. Clearly people wanted Biden to drop out. Was just referring to Harris.
