I have heard some people say Sen Mark Kelly as a Kamala VP pick. Not a terrible choice optics wise. White guy, astronaut, fighter pilot, gulf war vet, from swing state. plus you'd get Gabby Giffords on the campaign trail as the potential 2nd Lady and she has a broad likeability/compelling story.

all she has to do is lean on the abortion thing and promise progressive social policies, but I'm not optimistic. Dems run bad campaigns because they serve two masters, unlike the GOP who only has to stay in one lane. hopefully the decent strategists like Whitmer etc all keep influencing her campaign before she takes office, at which point she inherits the will of the oligarchs anyhow

She’ll be progressive on the topics it’s very easy to be progressive on but she won’t be taking a meaningful stance on most issues

which honestly is a slam dunk compared to answering a question about abortion with an anti-immigrant horror story

it at least can not feasibly get worse

Tbf it doesn’t matter how much she believes in it, need 50 votes in the senate to do it. Dems are looking at 49 best case right now unless they flip Texas or Florida puke

It sucks the can needs to be kicked down the road as far as a truly progressive nominee, but a Kamala win realistically clears the Trump threat to democracy (for good?) and stops 3 70+ year old republican seats on the court from being instantly handed off to younger repubs. Be better than Biden on Palestine and she can be an acceptable to good president even if the country deserves better.

Even if you sit here bemoaning Biden for not doing this before the primaries, it's not really like a truly excellent potential candidate emerged in the past 4 years (though I think Whitmer would have been both good and likely to win).

It can be so, so much worse than the kick the can down the road 4-8 years strategy.

My friend (giant lib) said they should have nominated Al Franken if they had any balls and I understand now why we don’t get too deep in discussion when it comes to politics.

I don’t think trump is the threat to democracy so much as *gestures at everything in the GOP and most of the democratic party* but he is a short term threat that needs to be taken care of immediately, problem is a dem 2024 win would be more of the same and an absolute slaughtering in 2028 from a republican more politically savvy but just as fascist as trump

I hear you on that, but I'm perhaps naively unconvinced that it's going to be easy or possible for someone without Trump's celebrity, (barf) sense of humor, or cult following to bring fascism as mainstream. I'm not saying it can't or won't happen, but I think he's among the only people who could pull off what he has.

Ehhh conservatives have such a deep well of media figures in their own circle that could easily arise and take the mantle. Sure the celebrity is exclusive to right wing media in those cases but like we’ve got entire generations of republicans just marinating in trumpism right now that are going to be gunning hard in 2028. I’m thinking daily wire type people. Maybe they’ll be too weird and off putting to make it anywhere but I think someone will come along with the same mixture of broad appeal and fascism with more political awareness that will make trump look like child’s play and I think we have to prepare ourselves for this happening as early as 28
