Someone in my theater yelled “is that Jennifer Coolidge??” when they first revealed half of Cage in the opening and my theater erupted with laughter. Wild way to start a film

This was way more Fincher coded than I expected it to be. It’s certainly bloodier and goes for a couple of scares, but it’s say it’s closer to Seven and Zodiac than any demonic horror movie I thought it may resemble

I understand people have different tolerances, but if you follow anyone that prior to wide release claimed this movie made them throw up out of fear, you should unfollow them

Alicia Witt stole the show here

Really cool opening credits. In fact I loved what few needle drops there were in this across the board

Longlegs screaming what I think was ”white as tits!” and the arresting agent saying ”I’m gonna need you to get on the Fucking ground” or whatever both took me out of the movie for sec

In terms of recent horror opinions I have:

Longlegs is one of my 5 favorite films of the year so far.
MaXXXine is one of the 5 worst films of the year

I thought it was solid and enjoyable but the marketing and Twitter hyped it up too much. Was creepy in parts but not scary in the slightest.

don’t know if I totally liked the third act but it was at least interesting

I really liked this but several things that stuck out to me as either questions or issues I had:

Harker's psychic abilities or intense intuition was introduced from the jump but I feel like it petered out quickly? Unless I missed something, it seemed like that was not really brought back up again after her and Carter discuss it when he first brings her on the Longlegs case
Nic Cage going going all out is always welcome and I loved his performance. However, the costuming and makeup didn't fully land for me. Not enough to take me out, but I just kept getting such big Marilyn Manson got stung by a bee vibes. That is still ultimately off-putting so I guess it still did its job, maybe this is just my own problem. Also, he spouts off a ton of weird shit in this - someone already mentioned the line about white tits before, and I'm sure a lot of it is nonsensical and meant to just be disturbing and unsettling, but do we know what Longlegs actually meant? I know he mentions having his long legs on in the very beginning with young Harker, but was that name meaningful for some other reason?
I get that there are some obvious influences here and they were also welcome (Se7en, The Silence of the Lambs, Zodiac, etc.) but it almost seemed like Maika was trying to do a Jodie Foster voice? Again, maybe just me but it was enough to distract me on occasion.
The demon under the blanket with the glowing eyes (or was it the doll each time?) was the best thing in this and it legitimately creeped me out. I would have loved to have gotten more of that.
All in all, still thoroughly enjoyed it and will probably see it again, but it didn't fully hit for me the way I wanted.

Lee wasn’t psychic. The silver “brains” inside of the dolls allowed Lee’s mom and Longlegs to have some kind of control over the girls and their families.

How does that track with the issue being introduced during the beginning unrelated case?

Oz definitely could've gone deeper with explaining how they worked. I do think it was clear that Longlegs some supernatural abilities so I think he was always the puppet master of his dolls/victims.

In thinking about this the day after, I think one of the creepiest things of this movie was that her mom was housing Longlegs in her childhood basement the whole time. When she goes to visit her mom and finds the the door is locked should have been a bigger clue to me.

for some reason this immediately made it clear to me that it was going to be the third act reveal. The main question really is how the did they know where to track him down — homie was at some random ass bus stop lol

  17. I wondered about this too. Felt like a half-assed version of John Doe turning himself in in Se7en.

    "I'll chew on a dog!"

In retrospect, it's so obvious but I thought it was a reference to Satan

I thought it was referring to both. The way he describes Mr. Downstairs had to mean satan imo. But then it also doubles as a name for himself in a literal sense.

there was definitely some ambiguity but I think once Harker saw the polaroid, she knew/could sense where he was

  22. For all the Silence of the Lambs comparisons this got in the leadup, it reminded me a lot more of the Hannibal TV series (which incidentally does have a moment that did very nearly make me throw up).

  25. oh yeah also in addition to these two, LL’s delivery of ”you could even, call him, Mr. Downstairs” in one of the flashback scenes felt like an ITYSL line lol
