Working my way through a little slower than y’all, but feel like I gotta comment on episode 8, jesus christ a show has not made me cry like that in a minute. Who knew Abby Elliott had that in her. She and JLC throwing a combined 250mph just there. Television baby

Almost all the little recommended posts from threads I keep getting on ig for some reason are people shitting on this as a whole, not just s3. I don’t really seek them out but I’ve literally never seen a negative review before this last week..wtf lol

 

Best episode of the season

 

One of my good friends is in town and she told me she only watched episode 1 and "hated it", and is waiting for season 4 to come out before she watches the rest of season 3 because she doesn't want to waste her time on a story "that goes nowhere" .

I think she is just basing this off bullshit she read on Reddit

 

Eh I think it's a valid criticism. I enjoyed it, but definitely the weakest season and accomplished very little. I wouldn't call it bullshit

I also think it's the weakest season and had some story issues with it, but still found a lot to appreciate. It's like people need constant narrative progression, if it doesn't then fuck everything else the show is giving you. Like stop and smell the flowers damn.

The main debate I had with her is if narrative was more Important than craftsmanship. My point being that yeah it was slow and took a breath, but the performances/direction/cinematography/editing/music were all at the show's peak this season. Like yeah episode 1 didn't tell you anything really new, but it was visually impressive piece of art.

 

the older i get the more i realize cinematography and good acting carry most of the weight for whether or not i like something

 

Another thing is in feel like most of the people calling this season "pretentious" or "sniffing their own farts" would have hated the some of the weird artsy shit they did in the Sopranos or Mad Men.

 

My main issue is that a lot of the side characters who we really got to know in the other seasons felt one dimensional this season and were given very little to do because they wanted to focus really hard on a few of them, idk

 

tell me the show that got massive acclaim early on that didn’t as a reaction try to expand their boundaries a bit lol. there isn’t one. just tell me you read reviews before watching and let the confirmation bias do its thing and keep it moving.

In episode 7 and it's so meandering... It's reminding me a bit of Easy on Netflix, like it's an anthology of conversations or stories at times.

I am not having the same complaints I’ve read online. I find it true to the show and to life to show the slice of these lives. Reminds me of Mad Men, not every episode or season needs to be a stereotypical hero’s legendary journey or move ten steps forward. That’s life. Sometimes it’s two steps. Sometimes it’s back. Sometimes you sit in place and don’t know what you’re doing or who you are even though you are trying to do right and achieve your goals and think you’re making progress.

I find a show about a journey fascinating and refreshing. There’s plenty of shows doing the other thing. I like living in this space. Have a couple more to go but have no complaints with season 3.

 

One of my biggest complaints is the show is so slow and takes its time and then resolves literally nothing by the end. They couldn’t even get to “Will Richie attend a wedding or not”. They took storylines that should’ve been resolved over a couple episodes and are stretching them over two seasons

 

Yeah it’s like, perfectly acceptable to afford these characters space to grapple with complex situations and feelings they have rather than letting the most human aspects of this show take a backseat to the improvement of the restaurant

 

It just bummed me out that there was very little Marcus this season. They just showed his mom die and that was about it. With Tina, it was nice they gave her a full episode, but she was pretty much gone the rest of the season. We got like, one scene of Sydney showing her how to fix a dish she messed up lol. There are other examples too, those were just the first two that jumped in my head

 

Crucify me for this, but I couldn't get through episode 8.
