Motion city soundtrack (headliner) and less than Jake (2nd support) dropped from OBX is for lovers. Guessing ticket sales? Beach music fest are great until it comes time to book a hotel/airbnb

This point is interesting when you think about the generic “loves live music” crowd. Depending on the city, there are so many random free summer concert nights with cover bands/local favorites that I’m sure scratch this itch + are more social/talking experiences.

I have some feeling that those lines are blurring a bit, both with folks who seek that experience from local venues/touring acts, or those local free shows picking off millennial nostalgia and getting fairly prominent acts to play what would otherwise be a food truck/beer garden environment

That's a good point and happens a lot where I live (NYC). If you live in the city, everything is easily accessible so you may be exerting less effort to get the actual show and it's super easy to just tag along with a friend if they have an extra ticket thus we have a LOT of talkers. Compare that so, say, cities/areas where you're driving, taking a commuter train, booking a babysitter, paying for parking, I imagine you're likely more invested in the show/act and less likely to chat through.

It's also the venue. I feel a lot of midsize / small venues (think 500-1500), if you're in the crowd and not back at the bar, it's hard to even hear anything but the band. At festivals and amphitheaters (which I don't go to many of) I can get how talking could actually distract from the music. Maybe it's my ear plugs too with drowning out talking.

I’ll never go to outside lands again because the entire crowd was talking over Radiohead (my favorite band) the entire time. They’re the headliner, if you don’t fucking care just go home!

Yeah plus if you're catching an act at a 500-1000 cap room, those spaces are usually for the die hard fans. Once they start being able to fill House Of Blues type places and above, more casual fans which = more chatter.

Chicago was a smaller venue but felt pretty full. Was in the back for Punchline and the room was filling up nicely, was towards the front for TSC so can’t really comment there

John // OC now, OH forever.

On their headlining tour that just wrapped, Justin wasn't playing guitar due to injury and Jesse wasn't on the tour due to his dad. Maybe tickets, but a longer HH and Thursday set isn't a bad thing.

I do wonder how many people show up to see Millionaires and Brokencyde in 2024, as I dont think they pulled that many people back in 2008-2012(?)

As a one-off in the UK, probably particularly if it's booked a year out and there is decent support. Definitely arena-level in US/Canada.

I generally assume that any artist playing a hockey arena or higher is going to have a certain percentage of fans that just straight-up doesn't care about the music at all, just wants to hear the "hit(s)" or the old stuff, or is there because "live music is life" or whatever.

It's bound to happen when you're talking about groups of people that size. But it also blows my mind in a setting like that when people ask them to be quiet and they just ignore them. True rudeness.
