This reminds me of Succession and to a lesser extent Industry just because it’s less popular. I know the majority of the audience has no idea what they are talking about when it comes to business and finance shit, but who cares because they’re so good.

 

Watched Sunset Boulevard last week it was a master class in how to use references in story. It kicks offs fast with a lot punchy dialogue hitting fresh 50s hollywood references, im not getting any of them but theyre not for me Joe is flashing them as social currency. Hes going around town trying to sell his script spitting them at everyone he talks to and theyre all lapping them up. It shows us even though hes in finical troubles this is still his town, hes quick smart and in the know.
The key is that they drop off completely when the setting transistions to the manor. An opulent parallel world stuck in the past that dispises hollywood trends. Joe's moves dont work here, out of his element hes going to have to work something else out and thats the fun.

 

Also you don't have to know that her butler is Erich von Stroheim, who directed her in the ill-fated Queen Kelly, which they show footage from during her famous "We didn't need dialogue, we had faces" speech. The movie totally works regardless. But that subtext is incredible.
