I actually relistened to it fairly recently and it is really unique. While some parts feel a bit overly whimsical in a way, it’s that extra-ness that makes the record feel the way it does. It’s interesting how it confronts the listener with an almost mischievous quality. I can’t say I’d return to it often (or even recommend to anybody), but parts of it bang and it’s one of a kind, for sure. I remember also enjoying Gloss Drop

    hmmm

Gloss Drop receives bonus points for featuring Yamantaka Eye.

Sorry I haven't read or contributed to this thread for a few weeks. Been a little low and completely lacking in thirst for new music. @OotyPa's pick looks like a belter though. I'll check it out.

  3. Enjoying Heart of the Congos so far. Very easy to chill out and sink into the grooves. It's definitely not a genre I've spent much time with, but this seems like a great starting point.

I listened to the first half of The Congos at work this morning and liked it a lot more than I expected, considering I didn’t think I liked reggae haha. I’m saving the second half for when I’m not at work because this is too chill to ruin with work shit

Congos album was a really easy and enjoyable listen! Haven't listened to much reggae at all. My mom's a big reggae fan, wonder if she's heard of them

My dad recognized Fisherman when I was singing it to myself last weekend

The album is considered a classic within the genre so I didn’t technically follow the rules with my choice, but I figured most here are unfamiliar.

So glad it’s resonating! Feel free to hit me up for more recs. We also have a thread on dub/reggae here on chorus but it’s extremely inactive. We could give it a boost if peeps are looking to begin a conversation. You can bet I’ll continue to share my finds there.

Fat Freddy's Drop is a staple on any reggae playlist here (maybe everywhere idk), everytime you hang out with the islanders you know its coming and it bops

It probably helps that I’m on an island right now, but The Congos record hit perfectly for me.

  15. Definitely @Long Century 's turn and we should give them 12 hours to see this. So if we wake up without a pick, it'll go to @ghostedaway

Is this the first live album of the club?

  20. What a fucking career Ginger Baker had. Cream, Blind Faith, couple records with Fela, semi-retirement on an olive farm playing polo and then just casually coming back and forming one of the most insane modern jazz trio lineups with Frisell and Haden

My second offical pick is the king of afro beat Fela Kuti. This album is electric, lightning in the club, and you feel it! The Talking Heads didnt get good till Eno showed them Kuti. Its very possible his worst behaviour has gone undocumented but his wikipedia reads about as good as you could hope for a famous 70s musician, supporting feminism, socalism, pan-Africa. Kuti was jailed multiples time for speaking agaisnt dictatorships.

  23. Excited to check this one out, especially with that description paired with the fact that I finally watched Stop Making Sense.

Also, I know my next pick and I can't wait to announce it. See you in three months lol

Thoroughly enjoyed this. I think my fav track on first impression was Black Man’s Cry but also loved Ye Ye De Smell. The drum solo in the last track is also an obvious high point and maybe the best one I’ve ever heard?
