It really is mind-boggling how poor Southgate has been this tournament. I’ve never really been a fan of his, but I do think England has done fairly well overall in majority of the tournaments he’s been the manager. I just think leading up to this tournament, it seemed obvious that the Southgate era had run it’s course. And these first two games 1000% confirm this. It is, and has been, time to move on.

If they had replaced him before the buildup to this tournament, I think you could argue he did “fine”. But now I think he’s been downgraded to a disappointment.

I don’t understand the aversion Southgate has to playing Bellingham as an 8. It’s literally where he has played for most of his career so far, and he’s by far the best option we have there. Foden could then play in his actual position as a 10.

Anything less than a deep run playing convincing football from here and out, and I'll agree. I do want to remain hopeful that there's still a game and knockouts (hopefully?) to go.

What makes me the maddest is that despite losing to France in the world cup, I was generally happy as I thought England looked every bit the part and just got unlucky on the day. I could go through every world cup and the euros from 96 on, and every England loss was deserved, even if the circumstances (like penalties) made it heartbreaking. It was nice in 22 to have lost with a team that went for it.

I am not sure that today was based on tactics. Too many misplaced passes that were down to the players. Nerves? Tiredness? (other teams surely are tired to).
