They definitely aren't. I do think it's an important discussion and brings out the worst in all of us sometimes because we care about this place.

Many of the comments were pretty constructive.

This all started because I said Parker was heartless and spineless and someone told me not to mock medical conditions hahaha

 

In fairness, not having a heart or a spine would be a pretty serious medical condition

I think most of the issues could be resolved if people didn't get defensive of shitty people in bands. Like, the scene is littered with them. The odds are always higher than not that one or more member of any band is a horrible person. It's not personal to anyone here.

And also, if we're going to chastise people for "not letting us enjoy talking about music we like" don't other people also have just as much a right to discuss how they feel about a problematic member of the band?

 

Well, now that this has all blown over I'm gonna head back into the Say Anything thread. Probably the last thread/band we've got where everything is on the up and up.

 

I would love to see this forum get back on topic and talk about the new album and their tour! This whole conversation has been derailed to a meaningless path.

Yes. Personally, Four Year Strong was one of my favorite bands for a while. And if they weren't so determined to put out horse shit, I might still listen to them. But I'd have to sort out how I feel about their association and defense of gross people and it's really not that bananas if someone wants to say "Hey they associate and defend gross people, you sure you want to support them" without reading it "Dave you suck, Dave you suck, Dave you're fucking terrible." lol

Right, but the same people who have - or at least complain about - that reaction are the same who claim to be so enlightened that they're able to "separate the art from the artist". What their reaction shows, however, is they're not actually separating the art from the artist, they're (ab)using their privilege to ignore the artist in favor of their personal enjoyment of the art.

I think what the posts that are getting criticized in here are doing is actually saying great, you want to separate the art from the artist, that is an intentional act and process you have to go through, not just a thing that happens.

You are also not above reproach for having chosen to continue to support the art - or even for choosing to no longer support the artist - but if you've done the work then you're likely intellectually and emotionally equipped to either not take it personally and/or defend your decision.

 

Personally I agree.
