Just watched last night's John Oliver. I'd heard of and seen bird of the 2025 Project already but goddamn did he show it in a harrowing and fucking horrifying light.

I seriously fear this election JFC.

My mom was such an enabler haha. We had a home economics assignment in 7th grade to do laundry X amount of times and she just signed off on it without making me

Speaking of unsettling viewing experiences. We watched this last night. I was like, "Cool, didn't know this was a thing I needed to worry about but here we are."

Oh yeah my mom was a stay at home mom most of my life and just took care of everything for everyone. Hell my dryer is broken and I went over there to do my laundry the other day and she finished it for me while I was downstairs working out

got my plates for my car today on first visit lol I’m pretty good at making sure I’ve got absolutely everything I need when I have to go to the license office but it’s always so nerve racking because it’s easy to miss one thing or bring one wrong form. anyway it’s in the shop now getting tires and wiper blades and anything else they can find wrong with it so I’m gonna be a nervous wreck til tomorrow

I absolutely was not mature enough for college at 18 when I first went. I did laundry and cooked and took care of myself, but I absolutely was not ready to be borrowing the amounts of money I was borrowing to finance an education I didn't even really want at that time

Yeah it’s insane they let kids take out loans like that at that age. And as someone who’s parents paid for their entire way I really had no grasp on what the value of my education really was and didn’t take it as seriously as I should have for that reason. I also had no clue what I wanted to do and didn’t even know what there was to do lol like that question is so loaded when you’re 18 years old of “what do you want to do with your life” when you haven’t even been exposed to the vast amount of possibilities out there

I borrowed it all, but same idea - I had no actual real world idea about the amount of money I was borrowing in total, how long that would take me to pay back, etc. and no real actual plan on what I was even doing there
I wanted to go to film school but couldn't afford the one I really wanted and ended up majoring in communications at a state school but honestly had no idea what the hell I was doing

I get really jealous and bitter of people who had a smooth college experience got a practical degree and went on to work in their preferred field or something close enough that it pays off. I feel like I fucking wasted all my time and money going to college. I know that’s not true and the most valuable things you learn in college are about yourself but having insight into my condition doesn’t pay the bills

Yeah my parents and I couldnt really put any money towards college sooo got my grandparents to cosign and now >$100k in student loan debt

Stupidly used that loan money to live in a very expensive off-campus house with 4 roommates

I dropped out after my first year because I failed half my classes because I hated doing school work after doing it for 12 year already (and I was clinically depressed going through a terrible break up) . And I knew my mom had my dad co-sign a $5000 loan to pay for my first year at a CC and kept reminding me it cost money so I had to do it or not do it and etc. that year and a half I took off from school made me even more aware of what it would cost to go back, so I was very deliberate about my choices after that. Def wasn’t mature enough to fully understand/take it seriously at 18 but going back at 21, I knew I wanted to go back part time to keep costs low, apply for Pell grants eventually, pay for classes out of pocket, etc. Same reason why I transferred to a small private non-profit school instead of UD when I finished at the CC. Wanted to have as little in loan debt as possible.

the upside was I finished college with a degree I could use with like ~$21k in debt. The downside was my horrible work ethic making me go part time when I first went back after dropping out, and dropping out for a year and a half already meant I didn’t actually finish that degree until
I was in my mid-late 20s. Also means I won’t be fully vested in my pension until I hit 60, and I don’t think I can do this job until then. I’ll be 55 when I can collect at a steep discount but then idk if it’ll be enough to actually pay for my retirement hah.

Meanwhile some other teachers I know got hired at 22 right out of college and are hitting 30 years at 52, and for a lot of them, they could retire at 25 years because before the state reformed the pension system after the 08 crash, teachers hired before a certain date could get fully vested at 25 years iirc

I went to college with a scholarship and quickly proceeded to torch it because I bailed on all my classes to sleep in and play video games, almost flunk out, hastily get my shit together enough to choose a major and graduate (7 years of college is normal, right?), but in the meantime rack up massive debt that I eventually had to file for bankruptcy to fix.

    Best years of my life.

I’m 99% sure I’m going back to school in my 30s to get a degree I can use ideally no more than a two year program

I would kill to go back to school and get my doctorate. Just way too expensive and the idea of writing a dissertation terrifies me. Might as well just get a few more masters and make Kanye proud with all my degrees to keep me warm.

same. One of the reasons why I I picked the masters program that I’m starting this summer is I don’t have to write a thesis at the end, there’s a test I can take instead. I love taking tests haha, I hate trying to come up with brand new ideas to research myself, especially historic topics.
