I mean, all the kid has to do is type the prompt "Make this essay slightly more dumb/sophisticated", haha

how do you do this for 20 or so years and still consider yourself a (fake) writer?

I've said it before, but chatgpt is great for sparking coding ideas in software development or completing small, tedious tasks for you. It's rarely 100% correct so I still have to do some brainstorming to fix their suggestions so it really doesn't do my job for me; just a useful tool and starting point. Haven't really used it for writing, but the only writing I do is small chats in Teams and like 2 sentence emails

My mom and I were discussing this just the other day. My mom was a kindergarten teacher and she's continually disgusted with what she feels is our educational system failing students by allowing them to rely on technology and not get the basic skills they need in the real world.

I never really thought about it this way before, but it strikes me now that the point of teaching students things they may never encounter in the real world is more about developing their skills in analysis, problem solving, deductive reasoning, etc. than it is about teaching them the actual thing.

And I can't help but agree that relying on technology to provide the answers takes something valuable away from the student's development process.

When I was a kid, I hated that there were restrictions on using even Encarta, and we had to have a certain number of literary sources. I thought it was needless, but looking back I think I understand things better now.

Any time ive tried to use an AI tool in a writing context it’s been more work than if I did it myself in the end

To AI’s credit, it does have a voice, useless though it may be

I think I was a little older when I eventually watched Neverending Story on VHS, but I watched Roger Rabbit when it came out and that scene FUCKED ME UP

Haha for sure. Man, why did children's movies love to include such heavy, fucked up things all the time? Although I guess Roger Rabbit was a bit more adult

Interesting factoids. Roger Rabbit was rated PG, and at first I thought this was because PG-13 didn't exist yet, but PG-13 was introduced in 84 and Roger Rabbit came out in 88.

Okay, so then I thought maybe it was a sign of the times, but apparently Disney was aware of it being more adult and wanted things changed, but Robert Zemeckis had final cut, so they released it under the more "adult" Touchstone Pictures instead of Disney proper.

But they still kept the PG rating, so what the fuck?

Seriously. the number of times you hear where they leave in shit where chatgpt identifies itself already shows you that. people using chatgpt to do a whole assignment dont tend to be the best and the brightest.

It was weird, anything with Peewee Herman made me so uncomfortable as a child, and yet I couldn't look away from it and still watched it all haha

  24. Super imposter syndrome? Always felt like I was sneaking in and not doing it "right"? I dunno, so many people can crank out these big longform pieces and I was always more of a pithy three paragraphs or let me talk about why I like something kind of writer. Never felt like a "writer" in that sense that I was doing a disservice to the idea of a "WRITER" if I called myself that. Real writers publish books and win awards for their awesome prose. If someone asked I've always downplayed it, call myself a blogger, been self deprecating. Probably should explore that about myself.
