Some recent games I have played:

Persona 3 Reload: 3 was always my favorite, and pretty much every change is an upgrade over the original game. Tartarus is much more obnoxious as an older and more discerning player, but changing that entire thing would have been such a radical change that they probably never even thought about doing it. The biggest downgrade is the voice acting for Aigis. Without going too much into the plot, the way Aigis shows up pretty late into the story but ends up ingratiating herself with the player character makes that last month so affecting, and the more robotic voice of the original made her budding humanity much more affecting.

Advance Wars 1/2 remake: The first half of these games are fun, but the missions just get too long. Like so many strategy games, a bad move or two in the beginning can blossom very quickly into an unwinnable map, but sometimes you are going to have to play for over ten minutes to even realize it, and even still some might try and play it out. They should have added some sort of checkpoint system, but since the mistakes would be already built in just have you start at the point where you "should" be.

Devil May Cry 5: I have now played all of these games and I cannot beat any of them. I did get all the way to the Nero fight, though, so I essentially beat this game. The Bayonetta games are just plain better in gameplay and sell their sillier stories better. This time I just mashed a bunch of random buttons and got a lot of S ranks.

Hitman: Blood Money: You get hit with racial slurs in the tutorial mission, in case you forget what passed for gritty and realistic in the 2000's. The levels-as-puzzles works really well, as long as you ignore the larger stupid framing story.

Yeah, one aspect of CSGO I wish they had taken was fixed spray patterns. Valorant is all about 2-3 bullet bursts right on the head since the hitbox is so much larger.

I know when the tutorial said make sure to stay within for 15 shots I was like 2-3 shot burst seem much better.

  9. still on that metroidvana kick so i started a second playthrough of 8Doors: Arum's Afterlife Adventure, on story mode this time rather than normal difficulty. I remember this game getting a bit frustrating at points, so hopefully this helps it go a bit smoother. I never actually beat the final boss iirc

I loved the first episode of the Night Springs DLC for Alan Wake 2. I do wish that it was a bit longer but the Twilight Zone setup and humor really worked for me. I didn’t want to burn through the entire DLC in one sitting and I’m excited to check out the other two this week.

    Player's Log: Shantae.

100% complete, got every RetroAchievement. The one that didn't unlock properly before weirdly unlocked properly after I briefly changed what cheat I was using, so I guess there was some kind of conflict somewhere.

I'll say this, my time with the game was enjoyable solely because I cheated my way through. It is a very excellently built game, and by that I mean the characters, environments, and overall world is quality, especially for a game of its time. You can tell the care that was put into the design of everything.

As a game though, it fucking sucks. Besides being brutally Nintendo hard and the dance mechanics being very vague to decipher, a lot of the abilities you can gain throughout the game are frankly, absolutely useless. Allow me to explain.

Throughout the game you can get four different transformation dances. These are actually pretty cool, and useful for the most part, but while using them, you can't attack unless you find four secret weapons that allow you to fight while transformed. These weapons are mostly unable to be located until close to the end of the game, making them largely pointless.

You can also get four additional combat moves for Shantae if you spend enough money. These moves are incredibly unwieldy to pull off, and two of the moves rely on the other two to even exist. One you have to charge up, and you cannot move while charging, so it's useless. Another is only useful for enemies in the air, and most enemies are not in the air.

On that subject, the enemy design in general is unfair. Enemies will pop up under the ground without warning, enemies will multiply right on top of you without warning, enemies will be deliberately smaller than you so you have to duck to attack them. It's like a who's who of bad enemy design. And since it's so hard to gauge your attack range, you're getting hit all the fucking time.

If you could somehow improve upon Shantae's main attack, it wouldn't be so bad, but you can't, so it becomes a war of attrition. If the other abilities you can get weren't a fucking joke to use, that would be something, but it feels more like they were an afterthought to add some "meat" to the game.

Fast travel is a fucking pain as well. To unlock fast travel to one of the five towns in the game, you have to first find five squid babies in each of the four dungeons, and then return them to one of the mothers in the towns. The mothers then teach you a warp dance, which requires like five or six button presses to activate, and if you fuck up once, you do it all over. It's nonsense.

Sorry, I'm ranting. Ultimately, the game is "of its time". You can see how much love WayForward put into it and the building blocks they would improve upon in future games, but it had a lot wrong with it. I'm glad I was able to experience it though.

Anyway, next I'm going to move on to a game WayForward made for the Game Boy Advance called Sigma Star Saga. Sigma Star Saga is an interesting hybrid of two genres you don't typically see mixing together: RPGs and shoot-em-ups. I played it way back when it came out but never finished it, and I barely remember anything about it, so this should be fun. I'm also definitely cheating.

  22. 8Doors story mode: beaten every boss on the first try so far. mayyyybe too easy? idk. I don't want to throw my controller through my monitor at least.

what I've always found interesting about 8Doors is it limits itself to mostly greyscale with dashes of red, yet the art for the environments is just stunning. huge departure from how colorful the Shantae series is, but still very pleasing to look at.

Yeah, I think it would've put you off for sure. From a time when "fake difficulty" was still a very valid design choice, although I recognize they were probably still finding their feet as a developer. It was their first game in that genre, after all.

My girlfriend Sarah loved playing Detroit and she just played through Heavy Rain. She some how managed to kill everyone yet again, and it wasn’t for a lack of trying to keep them alive lmao.

To be fair the QTE controls on that game are jank as fuck.
