I really enjoyed this album and I hate reggae

 

Glad you found enjoyment in it! Lowkey bothered by the hot-take haha, but let me just say that there's a massive preconception of reggae in that people mostly know the hits and/or the shitty bands that appropriated the sound to make "beach music." There's so much that I've recently uncovered in my short time exploring. Folks just don't know how deep it goes and what's possible within the genre.

This one also from the 70s rules... fucking out-there. no rhythm guitar, tons of reverb, 10+ minute jams. Sounds like the end of the world, mind-altering af.

this one too from 2003. an extremely eccentric combination of lopsided jazz, salsa, reggae, funk.

 

I guess my point was that before that record I did kind of have that purview but it helped to change my view

 

tbh: a lot of the songs had the same general sound and vibe but I enjoyed them because of the way they were delivered; in the hands of lesser artists they would’ve been just whatever but that band did every second justice imo.

 

Yeah, also not big on reggae personally

 

I am going to listen to this today. And last week's this week. I haven't heard much roots music but I've been getting into Chimurenga and Thomas Mapfumo (esp Hallelujah Chicken Run band, loved that one for years and years) and also some West African stuff lately, should be fun. I honestly didn't fuck with the Lee Scratch Perry from this year as much but I liked a compilation I heard last year

I actually listened to the whole record and tried my best to appreciate it, which I ultimately did.

which is to say you got it a lot easier than some of us did tbh but those people were trying their hardest to be contrarians, in fairness.

 

Oh the Dadawah record reissued this year is fucking awesome but also very unique to my understanding. Somebody (Aquarium Drunkard?) called it like Devotional Music more than Reggae lol. I have been diving into Creation Rebel too, their record from last year is pretty cool. Also a Ken Boothe compilation from a couple years ago was cool

 

the record starts out pretty basic with Fisherman, which despite its infectiousness, is really not far from your average reggae song. but it only grows from there IMO. I do get what you're saying though while I think it's a smarter record than it first appears. I keep returning to it for a reason and find something new each time.

but I think if you're looking for something even less predictable, check the Dadawah. that shit is wild. @Wharf Rat def hear the devotional music comparison. it's all over the place though. parts of it remind me of The Mars Volta honestly. very mystical and mystifying album. if you don't feel like you're in an altered state by the third track, i don't know what to tell you haha

 

Honestly, I think it's just reggae-heavy spiritual jazz. spiritual jazz is used very broadly so it works

 

just wanted to let it be known that I in in no way found it boring or anything. I can see how it might be a bit trite but it’s an older album, of course it is. a lot of the songs had the same tempo but I found them all to be ultimately be some bops. each one had me moving my head by the end which might not sound like much but trust me, my friend: that’s huge

 

absolutely need to check out the names you called out. I'm still new to that world of music. it's massive and overwhelming but has been great fun to dig into it. so interesting how you can find 40+ year old roots stuff that very clearly influential and superior to music being made today

 

he’s very knowledgeable in quite a few genres, which is why I think we are very lucky to have him in here tbh
