Currently watching The Sympathizer on Max. Really liking it so far!

 

Finally started this today and it’s unbelievable how much I can’t stand Bryton already lol. He’s worse here than he was on squid game.

 

pick my next prestige drama. we’ve been talking about it in the sopranos thread but I figured I’d expand the inquiry here. I just finished sopranos which was a big long undertaking I took my time with and didn’t really watch anything else while making my way through it (comedies excluded). so now my schedule is open to something new. here’s some options I’m thinking about. make the case for or against any of these or recommend something (unless I’ve seen it before)

The Leftovers
Twin Peaks
Tokyo Vice
Shogun
Better Call Saul
Game of Thrones
The Righteous Gemstones


which of these should I start next??

 

Better Call Saul

 

Shogun because it's only one season and it's current and it's fantastic.

Also Twin Peaks because it's truly one of a kind.

 

Leftovers then Gemstones then Saul

 

Leftovers then Tokyo Vice then Saul then Shogun

 

Leftovers. But if you don’t like it immediately keep powering through. Season 2 and 3 are miles ahead of season 1.

 

Alternate between Twin Peaks and The Righteous Gemstones.

Actually @sophos34 lemme recommend Counterpart if you've never seen it! FANTASTIC show.

 

while I appreciate recs of shows I’ve never heard of I’m trying to get to some stuff that’s been on my radar for a minute

 

Twin Peaks is my all-time favorite show and it's no contest. lots of surreal shit wrapped up in a seemingly innocuous package. watch the prequel film, Fire Walk With Me, between seasons 2 and 3.

The Leftovers is also fantastic for so many reasons, but especially the cast (having only seen Christopher Eccleston on Doctor Who, this show really made me appreciate his range even more). also surreal, but more grounded in its storytelling.

 

I had to read the leftovers for a religious studies class in college and enjoyed it a lot

 

Definitely watch it, season 1 is that, seasons 2 and 3 expand, with the book's writer being involved, and they're even better seasons

 

fair warning: the first season spans the book. seasons two and three are completely new content, written in collaboration with the author.
