Boardwalk Empire shared a lot of Sopranos directors and writers if you’re interested in that

Fully agree, I feel like it's a bit over hyped even though there was a lot to love about it

Sopranos might be my favorite show. But Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad and Mr. Robot come close. I loved Sons of Anarchy, too, but the writing is definitely not as good haha

Boardwalk is good but completely humorless. I never finished it

I like breaking bad I don’t think it’s anywhere close to sopranos or the wire and I believe that even more now that I’ve seen the sopranos and how liberally they borrow from it to build Walter white as a character

Agreed with this. Breaking Bad is fantastic but very overshadowed by its influences

TV is a pyramid and The Sopranos is at the top all alone.

below that you have the amazing tier that includes Twin Peaks, Mad Men, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Succession etc

My recent watch of The Wire honestly made me reconsider Sopranos as my top spot. It’s such a brilliant show. They can really stand together, I think.

But again none of the shows mentioned have more recently redefined television for me like Twin Peaks. I know this for a fact, watching the third season as it was airing live was the best television watching experience I’ll ever have. Near-spiritual at times. Totally mystified my world for a few wondrous months.

Again the wire is my top spot only because I’ve seen it so many times but aside from sopranos I don’t think any other show mentioned reaches that height. Still need to watch twin peaks tho

TP is a very different show. I love it for different reasons than the others, but just as much if not more. Yes it’s broadly about America but it goes even further and is also about reality and consciousness, good and evil, the afterlife, time itself. If you liked Sopranos’ dream/coma sequences, or if you’ve ever watched The Leftovers, you’d enjoy (but TP is better and even more ambitious than Leftovers, as good as it is).

I’ve never seen the leftovers but I actually read the book in college. Very interested in the show.

Deadwood is what you get when you're on too many SSRIs

for real. deadwood is absolutely on the same level. its the wire sopranos and deadwood in one tier for me.

guess i need to watch twin peaks.

I never tried Deadwood. My mom loved it back when it was airing

definitely need to watch The Leftovers asap. The first season is bleak but still excellent thanks to all the mystery and it just gets better with each season. Though I still think it peaked in Season 2 Episode 8, even if Season 3 collectively is amazing

First season of the leftovers is the best

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

that last season of Leftovers is one of the best I've ever seen. incredible finale

The Sopranos stands alone. The Wire's last season is bad, and the amateur acting along with the domestic scenes really drag. Deadwood ends unresolved. Mad Men is close but it is a little too optimistic about its characters. Succession ends at a perfect time because it risked becoming very repetitive.

season 5 of the wire is not bad. just pales in comparison after some of the greatest seasons of television ever.
