Yeah, I agree. The way they phrased it in the teaser "Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness and Something Corporate" makes me think it will sound like In The Wilderness but musically played by the guys from Soco.

  4. Well, I for one think both of the new songs sound incredible and never expected to ever get more SoCo in my life.

First off, seeing you say "Both" made me smile and I agree I'll be happy with any new Soco music.

in the wilderness was awesome and then as the albums went on i lost interest, it just got same songy and boring, but that debut and zombies were sweet

This sounds good. I've been on a bit of a North kick recently after many many years. The first 3 tracks are as good a run in any in Andrew's catalogue in my opinion. As You Sleep has such a unique vibe, beautiful song.

    this is all there is

I'll happily check out anything they/Andrew put out, but yeah, I hope the parts we haven't heard have a bit more of a classic SoCo sound.

Agreed with this take. I liked a number of the In The Wilderness albums, but the last one I just couldn't get into at all. This feels more of the same of that.
    That would make sense.
Two new songs? Does the other one sound more like classic SoCo?
Also agreed with this take. I'm still ecstatic that I finally got to see "Hurrican" and SoCo live last summer. It had become a dream of mine that I thought would never happen.

  13. If you don't think this sounds like Something Corporate, you won't think it does. They're not re-writing "If You C Jordan."

As You Sleep has always been one of my favorite tracks by them, and the piano-only version was to die for. So good.

This definitely sounds like AM&TW and not SoCo

Agree with others, was hoping for more SoCo. Not looking for 2024 version of If U C Jordan, but guitar mixed with piano heavy… I Want To Save You, Space, Hurricane would be excellent.

Not that it sounds bad, just sounds like more Andrew vs something different for SoCo.

  17. I'd highly suggest adjusting expectations for where the songwriters are in 2024 versus 2002.

There's Jason on his high horse again. We can have an opinion that the song clip sounds more like AM&TW then So Co and that's okay. Guess what...the song sounds like AM&TW.

  20. Where did I say someone can't have an opinion (on a song they haven't heard, but still), I literally never said that ... and again, you haven't heard the songs! ... and in what world does any of that make me "up on a high horse"?

So it’s essentially, Andrew McMahon in the Corporate Wilderness…….(which would also be a good book title if Andrew ever decides to quit music and write a book about Human Resources)

This might be slightly off topic but maybe someone could answer this. Being that both Jack's Mannequin and Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness are basically solo projects......why did he ditch the Jack's Mannequin name a few years back and go with In the Wilderness, as opposed to just slightly changing the sound of Jack's Mannequin? Is it just like a corporate re-branding? (pun intended) Obviously it's not a big deal but I always wondered about this.

That’s a good question. I try to take all these things as one record at a time, and in general I take life one day at a time. For me, the “in the Wilderness” name came from getting out of the major label system and into working on records on my own and taking control of some of the properties that had otherwise been tended to by the employees of the record company.

A lot of it for me was being in this position where you have a lot of rope to hang yourself with. It became this experiment of getting in rooms with different people and really doing a lot to put myself in uncomfortable situations to see how I could grow in my writing process and my production process, and even the marketing and the release strategies.

For me, that was the wilderness. That was my abstract wilderness, to sort of find a way through a new version of the record business and a new version of writing and recording and releasing a record. I can see sticking with it for a couple albums, but as of now it speaks well for this catalogue. If nothing else, it will be good for this album.

He wrote a blog post years ago when he made the name change. I think a big part of it had to do with how much Jack’s Mannequin was wrapped up in his Leukemia. He also mentioned how it made it easier to play songs from all of his projects live. Which is why now at shows you get some SoCo songs and Jack’s Mannequin songs with In the Wilderness.

When I saw Jack’s Mannequin live he only played Jack’s Mannequin songs.

Here’s an interview where he talks about it more:
