They just got off a 6 week tour and are taking a break. They have two more tours coming up before November, one of which they invited us to join a leg of. Shows not being announced on all platforms yet is a thing

Another couple examples of small bands that are really “doing it”: Lung, Daikaiju, Teen Mortgage. Teen Mortgage just wrapped up a fuckin Europe tour lol. A couple from north Florida for good measure: Home Is Where, Second Impact, GILT, and Pool Kids has graduated beyond DIY touring but are doing so well and selling out so many midsize venues in the indie label touring circuit that they’re doing pretty well financially compared to other peer bands.

And no, not every SDR show is that big but it kinda doesn’t matter if you’re selling a lot of merch. Conversion rate matters more. If they sell 15 shirts to a crowd of 30-40 a venue that doesn’t take a guaranteed minimum of their ticket sales or merch cuts, that can very well be more money than selling 30+ shirts to a crowd of 100 at a venue that does take minimums and does take merch cuts.

They don’t need the crowd of 150+ that we had at the 8x10 to make good money back if they have a strong door deal that guarantees them money from the bar; a high conversion rate on how many people at the show actually bought merch; at a venue like the Comet (where we played in Cincy) that does not expect any money from the touring band.

This does not factor in other things DIY bands spend less on, such as:
    -no band manager
    -no tour bus driver
    -no stage tech
-much lower budget stage production (which can still be pretty cool if the band knows what they’re doing)
-crashing with people they know rather than motels

cause the bottom line is, if a DIY band’s show bombs on a tour, at worst they lost what, $100-$150 in investment? Whereas a larger indie label band could be losing $1000 or more at a show that didn’t sell enough tickets to meet venue minimums (which is a much higher threshold at that level - gotta sell at least 70-100 tickets rather than having to sell at least 10-15 to break even), especially if they’re a smaller opener on a much bigger band’s tour and getting a shitty percentage of the show’s pay

Like, we drove all the way to Cincy to play ONE out of town date with no full band music out yet and only one black simple-design T shirt on our merch table and still made back almost $200

There were maybe 40 people at the show, it was a Thursday night in a town Terrain’s never been in.

So as you can imagine, a band like stop drop rewind that’s toured the Midwest many times, is great at social media and getting listeners all over the country to stay engaged, draws people from other cities they’re not even playing in, has multiple awesome looking colorful shirts and vinyl records to buy, has shows every day that are only a 2 hour drive apart, etc

can do a lot better than that per night when they keep their expenses low and avoid adding too many assistants who expect guaranteed pay (usually a tour manger and that’s it). especially if they do it in a way that “sticks” like SDR, they might only have 10k instagram followers but those are not passive followers - a lot of them really support them and come to show - so that’s a pretty strong 10k compared to someone who got 10k just because one of their videos went viral.

Doing DIY right, while it’s never gonna be more lucrative than working a business job with a 401k and PTO, is a lot easier to at least turn into something sustainable. Than when you try to go the label route and try to keep up with those high thresholds of tickets sold - despite labels taking everything you make outside of tour, despite venues stealing most of your merch profit margins, and despite the number of people involved in working the show or managing the band that get paid first before the band sees a dime. Yes, the signed bands who are doing really well do make $50k or more per member per year doing it - but you need to have like a Pool Kids or better reputation in the indie / punk scene as “one of the best newer bands and a must-see live” to really convert and see a healthy amount of money back while you’re growing to that point.
