I promise you that we talked to them at length about their approach to the music industry and legitimately at least 50% of their income comes from selling merch alone.

They do cover gigs, wedding gigs, play with other bands etc when they're at home but that's mostly because they dont' wanna be on tour 365 days out of the year. If they wanted to do that, they could sustain themselves, but it's also nice to be home sometimes and they have wives etc, so they pick up music jobs at home too.

The guys sold fuckin $700 in merch and made $400 from ticket sales at our show in Baltimore alone lol. It's not a LOT of money but it's over $300 a person. Being REALLY GOOD at selling merch definitely helps lol

 

the flaming lips thing is one album too. they just have four multi tracks for each song that are hard panned. they would play them in parking lots on PAs at the same time for “a true stereo experience”

even on streaming it’s just four versions of the multitracks for each song. i think three of the tracks got remixed so you can hear them like a normal person and they’re three of the band’s best songs lol
