yeah that would be sick I’ve been listening to TOCS lately and with the thick production of voyeurist it would slap so much harder

 

Since the post is accompanied with a 10 I just assumed they were counting down the tracks to generate hype. Given that they promoted the tour on the new emos not dead video I thought that made sense.

 

Just odd that there is a “6-15” that flashes on the last slide. I think a re-recorded TOCS could be cool, but in reality it’s probably a merch drop, haha.

 

Having a weird erase me revival. If that album had a different name on the cover I wonder if it would have been better received. So much cool stuff on it, it’s a great pop rock album with strong numetal and post hardcore influences

 

Maybe.

Underoath's name is on Disambiguation and people still love it for what it is.

 

I love erase me. I think people were very critical. On My Teeth, No Frame and I gave up are tip tier tracks and the ethos of the record seemed important to get them to where they are now.

 

the whole “if it was a different band people would like it more” argument never holds any water. this is the real world where the band underoath put out the album and it sounds subpar compared to their other work that’s just the reality of it

 

Ok, but that’s bc the fans of that band don’t really have taste that caters to that style of music right? So maybe if it was a different band but catering more to people who like hard rock and nu metal (butt rock) then it could have done better. But the majority of the listeners are going to go into it looking for a metalcore record, and yea that’s what the band does best to me as well, but I think for what erase me is, it does that thing very well!

 

Why.

 

The reason why people didn't have an issue with Disambiguation but disliked Erase Me is that Disambiguation really was not a huge jump from what they were already starting to do on LITSOS. Erase Me was a much bigger shift in comparison and it obviously didn't land for a fair amount of people. Which is fine. I have my reasons for liking it but I completely understand why other people don't.

 

also Disambig is simply a better album lol

 

I like Erase Me more and I'm not afraid to admit it.

 

I feel like I like Erase Me more than most in here but even I can't say that, more power to you though

well, I think metalcore fans had less issue with Disambig but on the greater scene level it seemed to take all the wind out of their sails. They played the smallest venue I’ve ever seen em play on that tour and it was barely half full. That said, 75% of the people on the erase me tour probably hadn’t even heard the new album and just wanted Reinventing 11 times.

I think Disambig is the better, more cohesive album but the best parts of erase me seemed to be the map forward. I listen to both pretty equally when the mood strikes.

 

I just don’t understand using hypotheticals to hand wave away a different opinion. It’s fun to play pretend but at the end of the day you simply have to accept that underoath fans had certain expectations on what an underoath album sounds like and erase me simply didn’t live up. And I don’t buy the argument it’s because it was too different because fans go along with bands shifting styles all the time when it’s executed well. Many of us simply think it was executed poorly. It’s really that simple. No need to play pretend and say well if it was a different band you’d react differently. There’s absolutely no way to prove or disprove what you’re saying when you say that. Frustrating.

 

Besides it sounds like they won the majority of us back over with Voyeurist shouldn’t you be happy

 

For an inconsistent album like Erase Me I interpret the “if it was a different band…” scenario to mean if a different band wrote it, that by going into it without expectation people would cling to the parts they like more and generally reflect on the album more positively. Conversely, underoath fans go in with expectations, as you said, but cling to the bad. I get the argument and it certainly can’t be proven, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable given how we know at least some people (myself included) evaluate music.

Definitely agree that, at least with this album, the issue was primarily execution rather than stylings, though I think the heavy music community is generally harsher towards style changes than other genres. As an example I think BMTH really had their finger on the pulse of what the greater rock community wanted with songs like Throne and Follow You. Nobody wanted Rapture or Wake Me in any way.

 

I like Erase Me more because I can hear Aaron's voice. That to me is part of what makes Underoath what it is. His voice is a staple. Not every song needs it, but an entire album without feels off to me.

 

It’s funny because I genuinely find something I like in all of their albums (TOCS onward). Like, if any of their albums came on shuffle, I’d listen. Now, certain songs are for sure “skips”, but yeah.

I also love Aaron’s voice.

 

I've only listened to Disambiguation 3 or 4 times. I haven't listened to it since the band reformed.

I listened to Erase Me a lot during the first few months it released, and I've listened to Voyeurist quite a bit. I think the latter is their best material since 2008.

Nothing tops LITSOS as a whole. Front-to-back, that album has everything I want in an Underoath album.
