one of the very cool parts of being a parent and one I didn't ever anticipate or even think of before is when your kid says something genuinely very funny or makes a really good joke that you didn't think of

Don’t disagree with the premise of it being terrible, but the difference here is probably that it’s a private university being shitty whereas in those two countries it’s the govt itself ordering dissenting opinion to be removed

I doubt I’ll ever have my own kids. My sister does not seem to want kids, so I’ll never be an official uncle. But I am an unofficial uncle to like 20 of my various friends kids and it’s always fun to hang with them. I get to do the fun stuff and have zero responsibility. Love it.

My one buddy that has a kid gets maybe 45-60 minutes a day to himself during the week because of his and his wife’s work schedules. No fucking thanks.

Wonder if this is the real red line for the US. Not sending their own troops as Hezbollah humiliates the IOF.

I gotta say, this is accurate for me - sometimes I gotta choose between working out that day or pooping

Kids affect your ability to poop? Another reason to think I won’t be having any.

Honestly the baby stage SUCKS but once your kids are older and able to do more stuff on their own and become more independent, it's like having mini, messy (and even the messiness is minimal compared to what it used to be) roommates.

My kids are about to be 10 and 7 and for the most part, just do their own thing, can make their own food, play on their own, etc. We are fortunate to live in a pretty family-friendly neighborhood with tons of other kids, so mostly they just play outside all day or at each other's houses and don't really need adult supervision.

My son has been in basketball, soccer and baseball since he was like, 3 so the past 7 years has mostly just been sports non-stop every night (which also sucks - even though I'm a huge sports guy, but trust me when I tell you, youth sports has become so cutthroat it's sickening).

Man I can’t wait til mine can maker her own food but it’s already way better than the baby stage

Same ages, same spot in life and same thing here.

My kids were “ok” babies (son had colic, daughter was fine but we were battle scarred) and both are infinitely more interesting to me every day. But that’s also because I AM interested in them. I see a lot of parents even among my friend group who see their kids as personality extensions OR good ornaments. Kids are not window dressing. They are people. People you can control and lead, but still people.

Our son has ADHD combined type and was exhausting until we found some medicine and a therapist that could connect all the thoughts in his head. My daughter loves music and is a pretty damn good little singer and soccer player. Will she be a pro in any of those things? Unlikely. But she’s having a ton of fun pursuing both now.

Where you raise them also matters. Like the above poster, we are super fortunate to live in a community with a ton of other kids from their school and others, so either of our kids are either hosting multiple classmates here or off at someone else’s. That’s really hard to do for other parents who don’t wanna deal with other kids noises or mess, but my wife and I embrace it because we would rather them be social (if they want to be) than just mainline YouTube all day. It’s very much like both our childhoods were, and it’s becoming a lot more rare as more people struggle with work and timing. It’s something America could do way better with and, for the most part, we choose not to.
