My fiancée wanted to take this one:
For context: I’m Eva’s fiancée and here are my credentials since I know they’ll probably be requested in the near future.

    • Division 1 Track and Field Athlete, with records in the shot put.
    • Day 1 WNBA season ticket holder and fan
    • Descendent of a woman, and niece of another woman, who both studied under THE Pat Head-Summitt, Billie Moore, Nancy Lieberman, and many more. (plz google, I’m not your mom).
    • My nickname was “The Wall” when I was playing basketball due to the fact that when I set a screen - no one got by except for my teammate.

Not only is this easily one of the laziest and most sexist arguments out there right now, it is egregiously untrue.

Due to the coverage women’s basketball usually gets, you (the collective you, not you personally because i have a feeling if I don’t explain that, you’ll stop reading) only see the whitest, most cisgendered, heterosexual, feminine players who so much as breathe near a basketball because the masses are afraid of the rest of us who exist in the actual version of the sport.

    Now, to get into specifics:

    1. The W is known as one of the hardest, most defensively minded leagues in the world. It’s apparent you’re far less than a casual fan because if you’d watched even more than a handful of games, you’d know that. That’s one of the reason’s it can be so hard to make a roster spot - if you can’t play defense, you aren’t going to make it.
    2. If you watched any of the last three to four years of women’s basketball (either professionally or collegiately), you’d know that:
      1. Caitlin rarely plays defense.
      2. Caitlin rarely hustles back to defend against fast breaks, long passes, etc.
      3. She’s easy to beat if you take away her regular perimeter shot
      4. Her logo shots are not high percentage shots and usually made in moments of pressure because her team is being defended so well by the opposition.
      5. SHE. DOES. NOT. TAKE. CONTACT.
      6. Breathing in her general direction would get a foul called in college.
      7. She really only gained attention because Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd were injured and god forbid the folks in Bristol talk about anyone outside of Storrs.
      8. The WNBA doesn’t care who she is, just that she better come correct.
      9. The turnaround time between the end of college wbb season, the WNBA draft, training camps, and then the regular season is roughly a month and the W’s FO did Indiana dirty this season with such a packed and rigorous schedule.
    3. Most of the things that CC is complaining about are normal, completely acceptable defense (especially screens - maybe her teammates should give her a heads up that those are coming. It’s not like you can’t see them).
    4. No one in the league hates her and it’s such a bullshit narrative. They’re happy she’s there, her presence is helping shift the way people see the game, but with that comes a lot of people being very loud and wrong - something that usually stayed within families and friends groups before the internet occurred.
    5. This league is not for the faint of heart, or those have been coddled, throughout their way through the world of basketball. Caitlin will do just fine if she listens to veterans who have been there (Kelsey Plum and Kelsey Mitchell, in particular - since they were two of the scoring records she beat).

Women’s basketball has always been this physical, this fundamental, and this enjoyable. Just because you, and folks like you, discredited it is not our problem.

Here’s some ways to help correct this:

    1. Buy League Pass and actually watch some games. Here’s the link: Watch WNBA Games Live & On Demand - WNBA League Pass
    2. Follow anyone on Twitter that actually reports and follows the league and these players - if you need referrals, I can provide them.
    3. Watch the 144 documentary that was made inside the Wubble in 2020. Here’s the link for that too:ESPN Films Presents: 144 (5/13/21) - Live Stream - Watch ESPN

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, games tip off tomorrow at 3pm EST. Hope you’ll join us.

  23. I’ve never discredited women’s basketball and the play I’m pointing out seemed like a dirty play that had nothing to do with setting a hard screen

my freeze out comment has more to do with the Fever players and even their coach not figuring out yet how to integrate her into what they’re doing on offense but I think that’ll get better as the season progresses

    I appreciate the comment

  24. Also no one here would ever question your fiancée’s credentials if anything they’d be a great addition to this thread and forum

  25. Fever schedule has been really weird and insanely difficult - they’ve played the Sun and Liberty both twice already two against LA and Seattle each and had the Aces once
