that kaytranda beat on the Mach Hommy project is so good and the singles from the album are good so I trust him for his next solo project.

I just don’t know how the Kaytramine project was so mid for me it had so much potential

Mach Hommy and Vince Staples are both fantastic - this year has been pretty slow for rap releases so far :/

  12. Haven’t not been doing a great job with keeping up this year. Buddy and Lukah were both getting a lot of rotation for a minute. That Roc Marciano record is good but I haven’t gone back in a while. Mostly just have a ton on my list that I need to get to. Kamaiyah, Rapsody, Mach-Hommy, and MIKE are all priority there

I’m not projecting my own experience onto the state of the genre, but personally I will say that only 7 albums or so have had staying power with me so far this year and of those 3 were rap albums and none of those 3 were in English. The jury’s still out on the Rapsody album.

Blue Lips is still dominating for me this year but the Kendrick tracks will all end up pretty high individually ofc. good year for Black Hippy

Not saying there hasn't been good albums, I just personally feel like there hasn't been A LOT like in previous years. Just my opinion! But there definitely are awesome albums so far.

Only listened to Blue Lips the once, seemed a bit disjointed. Need to give it another listen.

it's very good, probably his most mature to date, and worth another listen. I'm trying to make it more of a habit to spend more time with albums I've already listened to even if their initial impact isn't necessarily extraordinary.

I think streaming and beyond that our culture of mass consumption has created this environment where we're pulled from one thing to the next without really engaging. it's on the listener to return to an album (or a book, or a movie) more than once and give it the time it deserves. obviously not the case with a lot of quick-to-release algorithm-ready art, but I get the feeling the Schoolboy Q album is worth more than a single week's worth of conversation, but sadly I don't think it will get more than that -- partly because of the album it is among everything else

Makes me think of this Jay Z quote from when he spoke about exactly that:

“It’s up to the individual to figure out how to slow it down because, you know, it’s just going faster and faster, everything moving quicker, information is going quicker. [...] These great things are fleeting, they’re going faster and faster, and it’s up to the individual to slow it down and be like ‘okay, I’m living with this album, this is what I choose to ride to, this is gonna be the soundtrack to my life for the next couple of months’”

That has stuck with me since

There’s truth to that for sure. I know I’m very guilty of not always spending much time with an album that’s not hitting as much as whatever else has come out recently that’s feeling more immediate. It’s such a double edged sword because I’ve done it both ways and if I commit to less then there’s just so much I’m missing out on. I get to the point where I’d rather check out as much as I can and let the stuff that naturally sticks stick and let the stuff that doesn’t just kinda hang in the periphery until I’m in the mood to revisit or listen to that artist in general

  22. I think it's okay to listen to an album and decide it's not something you're interested in revisiting right away

I think it's more about letting albums stick rather than moving on even if you really like it right away

yeah, I just think rap is unfortunately especially affected by that churn. it's the tiktok-ification of the genre. this year, and maybe it's a reaction to last year, we've seen a lot more thoughtful works. it's more about living with an album rather than just hitting that first-listen "pleasure button" over and over.

There are records in the last decade that I probably ranked in my top 10 that I haven't returned to since the year they were released. Just a constant onslaught of "content" to try to keep up with coming at you nonstop.
