This record is really great, it has its own sound but still you can hear the styles and melodies from the older records. Also while Josh was in my opinion witheld on Scaled and Icy, he truly shines here. The drums are definitely present and unique on almost all songs.

Big time. I remember you saying Scaled and Icy was closer to the sound you liked from them when it came out. Does this album feel like a regression to you or are you liking it?

  3. Only one listen so far, lots I enjoyed. I really liked the brazen pop and less spoken word stuff of the last album, but there's some big layers and hooks here to sink my teeth into.

Took another crack at this album from a better headspace and it finally clicked! Vignette is my early favorite. Echoing what others are saying about the synth, it acts as a warm hug over most of the songs here. I think over time this will be tied with Trench for me. I'm relieved I like this now lol.

I’ve been a causal fan of them for years but “Overcompensate” unlocked something for me. I’ve gone back on all the albums and loved just about all of it. Clancy is the first no skip album for me. This one is truly top level for them. The lore is fun but it’s really the different sounds and the subject matter of the songs. These guys are awesome and I want all the success for them

    Sending my love

Navigating is one of the best songs they've ever done IMO. I think it's the most Mutemath-y track they've done yet. Paul has been a fantastic collaborator for them.

Navigating might be my fav on this. Reminds me of The Bravery

Yup, was coming in to say I finally listened to this and also think that Navigating is the best song on the album. That one and Next Semester

I did like this a lot on first listen but it was also more low-key/downtrodden than I was expecting from the singles and the album art, I'm going to have to go back in with that mindset and see if I like it more knowing what to expect. I'll probably watch through all of the videos actually

I also agree that it's weird that this site isn't that into this band

I have enjoyed this album so much. The way Tyler writes about depression and it's effects is downright fascinating.

They fixed your brain when you were young.

Imagine Routines in the Night not being on this record. Crazy Tyler doesn't like it and wanted to cut it. I've woken up with the chorus stuck in my head every day since Friday.

Loving this album so much. Growing on me with each listen. Paul Meaney's involvement elevates their sound a ton. You can tell these two have honed their songwriting skills a lot over the years. I like that Josh is also a voice of reason in making sure tracks like Navigating and Routines made the final cut. Couldn't picture the album without them. I too wish this site was more into this band, as I don't have anywhere else to talk about them (not Reddit).

    Fav tracks (not in order):

    Routines in The Night
    Midwest Indigo
    Navigating
At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb
    Next Semester

The first three singles instantly clicked for me. The album actually took the second play through to click and I’ve been listening non-stop! It’s hard to rank the songs but I will say is that some of the songs ranked low in previous posts (Like “Snap Back” and “Vignette”) are ones I completely love. It’s just a great album.
