2024 Summer Olympics - Paris

This an Olympics Year. Opening day 7/27. A little under 8 months out but figured I would start a hype thread early.

• Baseball/Softball and Karate are the only optional sports from 2020 not returning
• The optional sports of Skateboarding, Surfing, and Sport Climbing are making a return
• Breakdancing will be making it's debut as a optional sport
• 4 events have been dropped from the Weightlifting discipline
• In Canoeing 2 Sprint events have been dropped, and 2 Slalom events have been added
• In Sports climbing the former Combined event is being split into separate "Speed Climbing" and "Boulder & Lead" events
• Kiteboard (windsurfing) Racing will be making its debut within the Sailing discipline
• Surfing events will be held at Tahiti in French Polynesia, on the complete other side of the world from the rest of the games.

 

Glad they split the climbing up into separate disciplines.

As for surfing, the wave they’re holding the event at, Teahupo’o, is a gorgeous and thick wave, with very blue water. If they manage to get a good swell for the event, it’ll be a fun watch

Every Olympics I like to get into at least one niche sport not a lot of people pay attention to. For Summer I dig Olympic Archery. Big fan of Team Turkey and Mete Gazoz.

 

Just read about the sport lineup for the 2028 LA games

• Starting in 2028 Surfing, Sport Climbing, and Skateboarding will be promoted to permanent "core" disciplines
• "Optional" temporary sports for the games will be Baseball/Softball, Lacrosse, Cricket, Flag Football, and Squash
• Gridiron Football will be a demonstration sport
• Modern Pentathlon will have a major change with the horseriding portion being replaced by a military style obstacle course race.
• Boxing is suspended from participating in 2028 due to leadership issues with World Boxing, but could be readmitted later

Is it too early to tell who the athletes USOC are going to push as their big stars? I know NBC was really pushing wrestler Dave Taylor ahead of the Olympic wrestling trials. I think they're hoping for Taylor/Yazdani III for the US vs Iran angle.

I just learned that this will be the first ever Olympic opening ceremony to take place outdoors and not in a traditional stadium. It's going to be held at the Jardins du Trocadéro right infront of the Eiffel Tower. It will include a massive 160 vessel boat parade going up the river Seine.

 

I think it is pretty impressive they only built 3 new permanent venues for this. Besides those everything else is using already existing or temporary venues. Good way go avoid the mistakes other cities have made where they spend hundreds of millions on new arenas and stadiums that get used once, then sit abandoned.


Also I might watch Beach Volleyball just because of how incredible this temp venue is

 

A girl that just graduated from the school I teach at was in the swim trials today. She’s a beast but I don’t think she made it for the 100m freestyle
