The Killers - Pressure Machine (8.13.21) Album • Page 55

  1. I have never been able to connect with Day & Age. This band has never been particularly deep or cool, but Day & Age often feels corny and surface-level in a weird way to me. I agree with Craig's assessment.

I've come around on it a lot in the 15-plus years since it came out. I find it a lot easier to enjoy an album like that -- a zany, messy, off-kilter, somewhat "minor" album -- when it's just the piece of a larger catalog instead of the highly anticipated new album from one of my favorite bands. Still near the bottom of my Killers rankings, but I like it.

I play musical chairs with my Killers album rankings. I love Day & Age. My only constant is Wonderful Wonderful being at the very bottom every time.

Day & Age felt like an over-corrective to Sam's Town, merging the two previous releases. Some great singles but, yeah, some drab stuff too.

I disliked Human so much at the time (I enjoy it now) that I didn't even listen to the album til 5 years after it came out. Which I regret since Dustland is a top 10 song by anybody for me now lol

Day & Age always had this dreamy, laid-back feel to me that I liked. And I view this as the album where Brandon's voice began to evolve with that smoother delivery. If I want easy listening Killers, this is the album I go. If I need rockin' Killers, I'll put on Sam's Town and listen to Uncle Jonny and some of those bangers. If I need nostalgic indie sounding Killers, I'll go Hot Fuss. If I need summer music Killers, I go Battleborn.

All their albums seem to provide a different experience for me. I like it.

Good album, Losing Touch and Neon Tiger are very underrated and Spaceman and Dustland are top tier songs.

I love Day & Age (but admit I get bored of The World We Live In about halfway through). Good b-sides too, from Tidal Wave and A Crippling Blow to Forget About What I Said and the Four Winds cover which wisely nixes the “Santa Claus is coming to town” string line.

It’s harder to pin down the sound compared to the Killers’ other albums - which can generally be filed under heartland rock, new wave, or latterly country - but there definitely is one, and it’s kind of nocturnal and the definition of a vibe.

In terms of an emotional entry point, I’ve found loads of themes of detachment (from both individuals and society, see Losing Touch, Human, A Crippling Blow, Neon Tiger, The World We Live In…) and mortality (A Dustland Fairytale, Goodnight Travel Well, even Joyride!) across the record.
Think it might be the one where Brandon comes to terms with fame, which is also an angle you can view the Spaceman lyrics from besides the literal alien abduction thing.

Always liked “I Can’t Stay” off of “Day & Age.” Felt very different from anything else they did. Also, sax solo.

I guess the spam quoting you got removed. It's a shame, you could've been sipping that North Sea air, if only you were a little more online.

Somehow, I knew, when I bought tickets to Jurassic Park at the Boston Symphony Orchestra on 5/25 for 7PM instead of the 2PM show, I would later regret it.
