Maria Braun is just a slight notch behind Ali, Fear Eats the Soul for the best I've seen from Fassbinder. I think you'll like it.

Death by Hanging is close to my favorite on the list. Universally profound, Oshima is always impactful

Thanks for the rec, completing the list looks manageable and I’ve been looking for a sort of watchlist. Fassbinder is an easy way to want to start

I really need to see more Oshima. I did not enjoy In the Realm of the Senses or Taboo, but I'm sure he's got a lot more to offer in his others.

  6. Downsizing - 5/10

Yeah, I don't know what I expected with this one. A somewhat interesting and fun premise that wears thin about halfway into the film's 135-minute(!) runtime, so Payne has to apply a message to the back half that's so on the nose, it might as well have been the tagline (something something something bigger than yourself). It's not necessarily a bad film -- the first half is pleasant enough -- but it's not a good one, either. The most complimentary thing I would venture to call it is an ambitious failure; Payne is maybe sorta kinda trying to say something about weighing our own satisfaction against our values, but the whole thing feels bizarre and slapped together. Damon is solid as the lead, but Waltz's character is given no arc and nothing to do, just as Wiig's is in the first half. I think this one needed a few more drafts before it went into production, because it feels like a better Payne film would subvert the cliches here, not embrace them with lazy storytelling.

Downsizing is such a weird movie. There’s the kernel of an interesting film in there, but it’s buried deep. It just didn’t work.

yeah, we watched Downsizing on a whim over Christmas, and it just didn't do anything that intriguing. truly did feel like two half-films smushed together.

Party Girl - Very, very 90s movie. Parker Posey and the whole cast are fun and I liked it overall. While it’s first a foremost a comedy, it also feels a little torn between zany and some heavier moments. It has an Adam Sandler movie premise and I wish in leaned harder in that direction.

    Bad Education (2019)
    - Solid movie. I like Jackman and Janey a lot in their respective roles (even if the accents slip every now and then). It’s an interesting look into the clash of America’s public school system and our capitalist system. Corruption is easy to succumb to when you’re in a role that’s under appreciated and underpaid. I think it could have dove a little deeper into that theme, but overall a solid movie.

Good Grief - Some interesting shots here and there and moments when it’s enjoyable, but it feels like it’s trying so hard to be deep and insightful. Your eyes will hurt from rolling by the end.

The People You Hate at the Wedding - Slightly more funny than bad. Good enough but instantly forgettable.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 - 8/10

It's wild how much I used to dislike this movie, it's so, so emotionally resonant and I love it more and more each time. Benefits a bit from seeing how these arcs all end in 3. (Which is still probably my favorite in the trilogy)

Either way, these movies are by far the best thing to come out of the MCU for me.

Then again they've put out some real bad ones recently so Quantamania and Love and Thunder are definitely worse

I liked it a lot. Some corny places but damn, some of the history behind it is so upsetting.

Check the original from 1962 at some point. Much better than Marty's, which he'd probably agree on.

Infinity Pool blew my mind, I went in knowing nothing about it, I assumed it was going to be about a haunted pool or something.
