if you want to get real crazy, you can assign a permanent opponent so that you don’t break up historic rivalries like Eagles/Cowboys, Packers/Lions, or Titans/Jaguars

Memphis, NO, etc are not West in an absolute sense, but are in the relative sense because you can’t just have 20 teams in the east and 10 in the west

I actually think the 16 game schedule was perfect

6 games vs own division
4 games vs own conference divison
4 games vs opposite conference division
2 games to do whatever (I think they were usually own conference opponents from the other 2 divisions)

Yes that's what they were, conference opponents who finished in same place in their division

 

Im even more on board with the idea of collapsing the AFC and NFC division breakouts into just a single East, South, North, and West, and making minor adjustments like Elf did (ie. IND to North, DAL to South, BAL to East), giving the division winners byes, and otherwise populating a bracket based on record, but people love their 2 conference system and there’s no way to do that without making a weird arbitrary decision on who is “west” enough to get stuck with those teams

Play all 7 teams in your division once each, and a revolving 3-4 per division for the others. The NFL loves it too because they can guarantee every team plays each other in a 2 year cycle if they juuuuust increase the number of games to 19

Renaming scheme:
AFC North -> Grimace Division - Has @imthegrimace's team plus a purple team
AFC South -> Ranch Division - Has horses and cows and randomly a cat
AFC East -> Freedom Division - Has the Patriots, a team that avoided Canada relocation, and the 9/11 team
AFC West -> Apocalypse Division - Has lightning and 2/4 of the four horses of the apocalypse and fake pirates who kill people
NFC North -> Drew Beringer Memorial Division - Self-explanatory
NFC South -> Free Space Division - Self-explanatory
NFC East -> Primetime Division - Again self-explanatory
NFC West -> The 8th Division - A reminder that the NFC West is a division
