You will never make me feel bad about emulating and piracy I guarantee I spend more on this industry than the vast majority of people

Nintendo: It's okay, guys. Sophos spends money on other companies. We can let him have this one.

We're talking about a 20 year old GameCube game here.. nobody is pirating an actively sold game with qol improvements

And I'm sure Nintendo will take that into account when they look at the sales numbers and decide if they want to continue investing in the franchise.

i can sense we're about two posts from rehashing the ethics of piracy and emulation for the billionth time...

not to speak for him, but the point Pen is trying to make here is (or maybe just me); if this remake of said 20yo game doesn't sell well then Nintendo will get the idea that the amount of ppl who want this "return to form" for the Paper Mario series as an RPG is small enough that it's not worth investing the resources in/not enough of a return on investment

i'm already shocked that they didn't just do a port, didn't just slap that "HD/Remastered" tag on it, but actually did a full remake and are marketing it like it's a new title

  8. I will be buying it but do not care if people find other means of playing it

I've seen tons of people who actively pirate whatever new game comes out regardless of if it's a remake or whatever

I also was just trying to be funny but the weird defensive takes do kind of irk me. I emulate the shit out of stuff but I'm not going to pretend it doesn't have ramifications.

I’m someone who is (hoping to) go into a store and spend $80 to buy a prettier version of a 20 year old day one and still what is actually irksome is bootlicking for a billion dollar corporation as if emulating a game you’ve already played is going to kill the industry, they’re going to be okay!

I understand the supply and demand argument and maybe I’m vastly underestimating people’s capabilities but I honestly can’t imagine the majority of people know or care to learn to emulate games to the point that it would be more than a drop in a bucket.
Nintendo is the only company I genuinely love and even then, they’re still a company that would rather charge full price for old games rather than make something new and it’s nothing to get sanctimonious about.

I think it’s worth supporting companies who offer full complete products and don’t try to milk out season passes and a million micro transactions.

Sure, at the end of the day it’s a wildly profitable corporation, but I’d like to believe the more consumers support good practices and understand there are studios and developers who are passionate and whose salary depends on support, the more studios like Larian and others can get the growth they need to keep putting out great products.

Have I emulated? Sure. Would I prefer to purchase remastered games? Absolutely.

I just want to avoid a future where everything is a cheap money grab micro transaction.

similar to how music piracy made the industry shift to streaming (which has had many upsides and downsides) I wonder if this big emulator push will force nintendos hand to finally make their older catalogues more accessible for purchase because I think Nintendo fans are pretty loyal consumers and would hand over the money.

We certainly see them do it for every new janky technically awful pokemon game.

Switch piracy is barely a blip on the radar. It requires specialized software that’s hard to set up and powerful hardware that is fairly costly.

if a switch title flops it’s either not or badly marketed, priced stupidly, sucky or all of the above.

Then it's no different from me buying it on eBay. Nintendo gets no profits for that because they no longer sell it directly. What if I already own the GameCube version and am emulating it just because I'd prefer to play it on a handheld? Or, because modern TVs no longer support R/Y/W cables? I have literally no way to plug in my PS2, GameCube, Wii and N64 anymore even though I still own them

I think you're missing my point, which is that people are talking about emulating the GameCube game instead of buying the Switch remake. I definitely do not give a shit about people emulating old software.

Hey, remember when someone asked Square if we'd ever get a new Chrono game and they replied by saying if we want a new game we should buy the DS remake? Man, that was something.

So few people are even aware that emulation is even thing. Even fewer are people aware of emulation but DGAF about doing piracy. Even fewer are people who know how/have the hardware to actually do it. Nintendo doesn't care.

Maybe if suddenly tons of 11 year olds figure out how to easily emulate games than they'd give a shit.

Also want to clarify, no, I don't really believe Sophos emulating the GameCube Paper Mario instead of buying the Switch remake is going to spell the death of the franchise. That's why it was a fucking joke.
