I really think it’s just that WWE is hot. There’s a number of people that didn’t want an alternative to WWE they just wanted WWE to be better

  7. Yeah I think this is it tbh.

Despite the EVP storyline being fun to me. I can see why people wouldn’t really care for it.

also a majority of cable is legitimately dying if you look at more than just wrestling ratings.

I mean, some of it is definitely the post-CM Punk bubble bursting; obviously he wasnt there yet 3 years ago, but Hangmans story was red hot, etc. And CM Punk really tribalized things, so when he was gone, the fanbase was more hardcore (but also inherently smaller)

edit: ANd yeah, obviously the bloodline story and WWE being better all last year helped a LOT in pulling viewers away

And the rest is TV/cable being down. Without showbuzz its hard to say exactly what viewers dropped, but from May 12 2021-> May 10 2023, the Chicago NBC shows dropped from ~7mil to ~5.5mil viewers. Masked Singer went from 5mil to 3.5mil. Vanderpump probably had a big drop off after the drama stuff, but they went from 1.4mil to 500k. Hell, even AEW was up in the demo (.31 v .32) and down like 80k fans

AEW has also lost like all of their biggest stars and hasn't exactly done a great job at creating new ones aside from MJF and Darby

    Cody in 2022
    Punk in 2023
    Sting in 2024

Swerve is the World Champion right now and is playing second fiddle to The Young Bucks. And if viewership is your main indicator of what the fans like, making the Bucks your main program should have Tony in jail

I do think injuries are playing a decent factor right now too. MJF, Kenny, Hangman, and Cole are all hurt so their main event scene is a bit dry

But also WWE being hot is a major contributor

Also, as much as I like most of what AEW is doing right now, its not "you have to watch every week to follow the stories" kind of stuff. I imagine an AEW fan who tunes in to the go-home and PPVs will have it pretty well figured out for most of the stories.

Some of the characters are red hot (Swerve, Toni, etc), but their actual story arcs are kind of plodding

The way they book babyfaces has annoyed me more than anything. Once somebody gets over they don’t know what to do with them except beat them up every week. I get that heels need to get heat, but it gets tiring when you do the same thing for four weeks in a row.

Ospreay is off to a great start though.

I miss the "have them work a 30min main event match against a legit opponent" thing they did for Hangman, etc

John // OC now, OH forever.

It’s a cool song, but it’s slow and plodding when he’s presented as a daredevil maniac with no regard for his body. With as god awful as AEW production is for music, it’s barely audible most times and lacks the immediate recognizable note that tells you who is coming out.

After looking at the Collision/Rampage card, I’m not that bummed I didn’t go. AEW definitely has an issue with booking random matches with no build that have highly predictable outcomes for a lot of the weekly TV and especially those two shows.
