expecting celebrities to post about things is really dumb in my opinion. first of all I don’t need to hear a celebrities opinion to formulate my own although I understand the argument in spreading awareness. which brings me to the second point, celebrities are not always going to say the exact thing you want them to say and it’s far better for them to just shut up in my opinion because you’re probably not gonna like what you hear if they do open their mouth

What's weirder about this whole tiktok list situation is it's not targeting celebs but rather influencers, and anyone else with a big following who may or may not make money through social media, so like, regular people. Like, why care so much what people with hardly any actual power and political sway post online, it's such a waste of time and effort

I don't hate the concept of unfollowing/blocking people because people who make money off their content and get sponsors based on numbers do care about that stuff. But when it's just a big mass unfollowing of a bunch of people it doesn't rly do anything. I feel like it would maybe have more impact if it was focused on a large blocking of a small number of individuals instead of casting such a wide net that they don't rly feel it because then it's a lot of people all unfollowing a bunch of random different people.

But I imagine it's also hard to have that sort of unity or consensus on such a vast platform

To be fair if you don’t take a moral stance on what is happening in Gaza it is at least on some level a moral failing. Not saying it’s worthy of stopping support for someone though but could be disappointing. Definitely don’t see how that’s an impossible standard either way.

Also excuse my ignorance I don’t have tick tock or twitter but aren’t influencers uh influencing? So doesn’t it matter what they’re saying? In that case we should care about what they are saying about what’s happening in Gaza. People in Gaza are being slaughtered and starved, and oh yeah we’re giving Israel another billion dollars of weapons to do it! I’m not going to be overly critical about people who care trying every little thing they can to make a difference. It’s not like calling on politicians has made a damn bit of difference

 

I don't think anyone's attacking them for saying something, rather just the expectation that they DO say something is silly and trying to "cancel" them for not saying anything is somewhat dumb. Which I kind of agree with. I don't need to hear from every single person, especially since some of those people are clearly not at all educated on the topic and might say something dumb lol

 

I think there should be a clear difference between influencers not commenting on Palestine, and those who vocally support Israel.

Imo, everyone with the ability to do so should strive to understand what’s happening as well as possible. But, also, it feels like a weird trap to demand every single TikTok-famous person say their gut response to what’s happening, especially with how powerful the Zionist propaganda machine is. One more streamer probably isn’t gonna tip the scales of justice, and I respect anyone who’s like, idk, I don’t have enough of a grasp on this to have anything of value to say. (Even if I’d also then hope some of these people would feel the conviction to look into this atrocity a bit and reach the point where they can be on record as against this ongoing genocide.)

 

while i understand why people are blocking others, there are a number of problems with its execution that make it seem like it's not as effective as people hope it might be. the biggest criticism people have offered is that focusing primarily on blocking as some sort of morality test detracts from centering people who actually need help.

another problem is that people are arguing that high profile individuals who are just now posting about it are disingenuous, and still proceed to block them. idk their intentions with posting, but if you're wanting more exposure on the issue at hand, it feels weird to block someone after they make one post talking about Palestinian casualties. if your goal is for people you like with large followings to use their platform to center the genocide of Palestinians, wouldn't it be more effective to tell them "this is good, but it can't be a one and done thing, we need increased attention on the issue"? i don't know if blocking someone is the most effective way to get someone to share more about a particular issue.

but this all gets back to the point many of you are making. as great as it would be for those with large platforms to highlight important social issues (since those in smaller positions do it all the time), some people with massive platforms simply just aren't going to do that, no matter how much you ask them to. in those cases, block if you want or don't block at all. but it's probably more important to focus your energy on other efforts than continue expecting people with massive followings who have been silent to finally speak up and say something (even though they really should).

 

on a similar note, one thing i've seen from the individuals who are pro-blocking is that they argue that those who take the effort to explain why they don't feel compelled to speak on the issue/don't feel like they have power to do anything significant could instead use that energy to learn more about the situation at hand (Lizzo is one people keep mentioning who said something about this). that's a very valid criticism, but if someone's not gonna do that and instead take the time to explain why they won't, it's just better for them to be quiet instead of putting themselves in a position to receive more criticism.
