huh, weird. i dunno, i think i expected something a bit bolder? i'm seeing some similar feelings on this feeling a little safe in other spaces but to each their own. i still like it, i think i just had hopes for something a little more experimental.

edit: hate this subreddit but i think this comment sums up my thoughts better than i can. i think an album can avoid going down the accessible route and still feel safe, like this one. i just didn't feel very surprised by the album like i was expecting (save for thirst and sit & mourn). it's very solid at what it does though.

This is what I was going to come in and say, they use the breakdowns to create so many groovy/dancey moments…loving this so far

That comment makes no sense. What they say in the first point - they took the best parts of their earlier work and combined and polished them into a complete whole - completely contradicts the second, that they don’t like that this is polished.

Of course it’s less raw and more polished, that’s what allows them to achieve what they do and nail the sound(s) they’re going for.

Yeah this albums a modern classic, the sound of a band being offered a unique moment and not only seizing it, but pushing it beyond what we’d expect.

the biggest thing I hope is for this to be a “rising tides lift all sails” situation, where the newfound eyes on the genre can finally help breakout the bands that have been grinding it out for years

This is currently showing in stock at all the Targets in Birmingham, really think I’m going to go in store and get it for the pure novelty of walking through the most sterile, corporate store in the world with a record this heavy.

Sit & Mourn is just on another level. That creepy synth line that's super quiet in the background, the atmosphere, the black metal/blastbeat part, they really let the album go out on top.

I guess I like “metalcore” now because of SeeYouSpaceCowboy so I will give this a listen later.

I keep seeing metalcore get thrown around, and I guess it technically applies, but when I think metalcore I'm thinking bands that spawned out of the early 2000s sound like Killswitch Engage. There's usually a more melodic component to metalcore. This falls squarely into that metallic hardcore sound, which sounds silly to distinguish between, but these guys have a lot more in common with Jesus Piece or vein.fm than like, Memphis May Fire or something.
