Prey had a fun premise with cool abilities too. It was super fun for the dozens of us that played it. But I'll give the Blade IP the benefit of the doubt. A few hundred people might be into it.

Genuinely baffled at Microsoft's thinking right now. With the resurgence of survival horror Tango could have capitalised with either TEW3 or a new IP. From all reporting Arkane Austin made Redfall against their will, and could have gone back to making critically acclaimed single player games. As someone who loves the Series X and has invested in Xbox for three generations now, I really don't see many reasons to stay invested (outside of Game Pass, which has arguably been the catalyst for all their current problems...)

    what is Rare doing?
    where is Gears?
    what's up with Halo?
why did Forza shit the bed?
why did Starfield shit the bed?
    where is Perfect Dark?
    what happens when Avowed under-performs.
    where is Fable?
what if this year's CoD is as bad as the reports are saying?
what the fuck is up with Blizzard?

and the less said about console sales and Game Pass subs the better.
Also once again going on record about the absolutely bone-headed existence of the Series S.

Metacritic has a lot of gamers these days confused. Critical acclaim doesn't mean anything if people don't play the game. That's just a fact.

If critical acclaim goes hand in hand with effective marketing it's absolutely a factor in a game's success. Unfortunately, Microsoft are terrible at marketing their best IPs.

You don't need critical acclaim if you have effective marketing. There's too many examples of this being the case. I agree that marketing has been one of if not Microsoft's biggest weak point, but personally, I don't think better marketing would have pushed the needle on Arkane's output. There's just some games people don't like playing and Arkane happens to make those kinds of games. I don't want to sound defeatist about it. To be clear, I'll always root for the companies that make immersive sims. I love that design philosophy so much. It's timeless. But ultimately, it's the collective gaming community that decides what's worth anything. We have decades of evidence that proves throwing bigger budgets at that kind of game isn't smart.

Tango could have benefited though had they stuck around long enough. That's the one that hurts the most. Not that they made huge hits or anything but given enough time and better marketing, they could have been one of Microsoft's more successful studios. At least that's what I think.

I don’t know if this helps but it feels wrong that the closing of tango pushed me to buy hifi rush even though i had every intention of getting it anyway (it was on sale but yeah /: )

LRG is supposed to be releasing physical versions of Hi-Fi Rush. I plan on ordering a copy when it's available.

Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and the sequels are probably a nice starting point. Web slinging around New York rules. Combat feels good and working a team of jobers stays pretty fresh till the end. The games are also pretty as all get out and are a nice showcase for graphics.

Hades might be good. It’s a rougelite and play sessions or runs can be done is about 30 minutes or so. Combat is fun, and gets wild based on the boons/power ups you receive in each run before it all resets on death. There’s also a fun story and some progression systems there so even a “bad” run doesn’t feel like a waste of time.

Returnal is kinda a wild card pick. If you’re into what returnal is doing, it’s one of the best games around. Game is hard; it’s a third person bullet hell shooter with vicious health mechanics. The atmosphere of the game rules, and the story is a weird mystery wrapped in a horror story that has one of the best game twists I’ve ever experienced.

Balatro is an actual wild card pick. It’s a puzzle game where you build poker hands that try to blow the game’s scoring system to bits. Elevator pitch for the game is not good: game is very good.

Superliminal is mind blowing. Puzzle game where your perspective literally changes the world. Feels like a game built on dark magics, and is short enough to finish in an evening or two.

I'm just know remembering this is a real life game in development. I was so confused when it kept getting mentioned as I assumed it was shorthand for some other title lmao

Reading Matt Booty's statement again and his comment about the prioritisation of 'High-Impact Titles' really stuck out. Is it safe to assume they're shifting staff to try and rush out the next Fallout game and capitalise on the current hype (which will inevitably not exist by the time they have a game ready to release)? If this is the logic here it's unbelievably short-sighted.

no company thinks about the long term. execs dont plan to be around for long so they just care about the next quarter, fuck what that means future-wise.

True, but I don't even think there's a short-term gain here. The window of hype for anything quickly passes and unless future seasons of the show reinvigorate that hype, I don't think throwing all their resources at one IP makes any sense. Obviously just speculation on my part, but it would be a very Microsoft move to throw a ton of money at a project while missing their window of opportunity by a massive margin.

clearly they should be focused on getting ES6 completed. but people in entire other studios shouldn’t be getting canned over this. and they definitely shouldn’t be acquiring as many studios as they have just to upend them and peoples jobs. put these talented people in teams that help create those high impact titles. a game like ES6 needs all hands on deck.

If that's the case, whoever made that decision needs to be drop kicked. I think when people criticized Microsoft for not having a new Fallout game ready to take advantage of the hype, they weren't expecting studios to be shut down to make it happen. Yikes. Plus, this is Bethesda we're talking about. They couldn't even patch Fallout 4 correctly. They might get another Fallout game out when the Fallout tv show has already finished. lol
