maybe serious isn't the word i should've used. i get what she's trying to say, and i'm not saying it's supposed to be a completely serious line. it's that it's passed off as a moment of intimacy in the midst of something more nostalgic and youthful. sure, there are other lyrics on the song that do this, but trying to achieve the same effect by juxtaposing intimacy with GTA just doesn't have the same effect as the rest of the song.

Ahh I get what you're saying. I do think it feels like something that could feel romantic and intimate to a teenager though and that just makes it funnier for me.

i do think part of the stark reaction to this line did come from the fact that someone tweeted a portion of the lyric with that Genius screenshot, but every in-depth criticism i've seen of this line knows the message she's trying to convey about nostalgia. they just think it could've been handled a lot better with different wording. and that at bare minimum, it's just a very odd line coming from a White woman whose previous mentions alongside discussions of racism have not necessarily painted her in the best light.

Don't know if this is a hot take, but the more I listen to this album, the more I think the only really bad song here is the Kim Kardashian song. The "my saintly mother used to wish you were dead" line is so wild considering the actual grievance at the root of that beef, and the weirdly serene melody just does not work at all with the lyrics. Maybe that's all part of the point and it's supposed to be light parody, but then you get to the "there wouldn't be this if there hadn't been you" line, and I just don't know what she was actually going for with this song. Do not like!

London Boy and ME! are some of the only reasons i rank this higher than Lover. this album is also unfocused, but as a whole, at least the lyrics here are somewhat less-juvenile than Lover, and those two are the worst offenders.

This is all true, but she still could've workshopped that lyric a little bit. It reminds me of the "mouthfuck you forever" lyric from "mad woman." It is both clear what she is actually saying/trying to say and a double-take moment that takes you out of the song. Second draft that shit, Taylor!

Craig, hold on - Taylor Swift has a lyric where she says "mouthfuck you forever" ?!?!????!?

this is crazier than when you just casually dropped the fact that your cousin co-wrote some of the biggest songs in recent years with Post Malone on us

We reach for the longest shadow

I'm not sure if you're joking, but the lyric is actually, "mouth, 'Fuck you, forever' " but the way she sings it definitely makes it sound like the former.

EDIT: Couldn't initially remember the name of that one, but it's Mad Woman

I wasn't joking. I mean, I was teasing Craig about his cousin and that fact that still blows my mind, but the Taylor Swift lyric thing I was being serious about. I'll have to go back and listen to the song.

Notice how I said those were just the ones off the top of my head. There were more lines I heard and rolled my eyes too I just don't remember them all unless I go back to the songs. Not every person who likes taylor swift has to enjoy all her lyrics with the same weight as everyone else. You like her lyrics on this album, I didn't like them as much and gave examples for some I didn't like.

I just went back and listened to the song with the lyrics on - I can see how they are written, but she absolutely says it so it sounds like he really dirty way. Not sounds like, I mean she says it that way. That was an important comma! and such a weird one to skip vocally!

reminds me of Blinded By The Light, where I know the lyric is supposed to be "revved up like a deuce" but he 1000% sings "revved up like a douche".

I definitely don't feel like it's a personal attack and I don't care if you don't feel the same way I do, I'm just curious how someone can think these are the worst lyrics she's written by far and didn't get much from your answer. That's fine though, you don't owe me a detailed explanation of what lyrics you don't like and why.

Also, I'm not trying to be combative in any of this lol. I can't seem to word this in a way that doesn't read a bit dickish to me.

It's hard to describe, but you can hear when a comma is there in a song and when it's not, and I also don't hear one on that line!

carried in the arms of cheerleaders

All she had to do was tweak the phrasing to use “mouths” instead of “mouth” (like “as she mouths” or something) and all this could have been avoided haha

Had no idea there was such *discourse* happening around “But Daddy I Love Him”, “Guilty as Sin”, “I Hate It Here”, etc. in evangelical circles right now. Been running across a lot of posts about it around the internet and I am always left very grateful to be a nobody. I know much of the lyrics can be read as metaphor for the parasocial relationships formed between Taylor and the worst of her fans who judge her life choices, but there are also groups of people going through religious deconstruction who read those lyrics as literal criticisms of the church which has also apparently led to an uproar within evangelical churches calling her a witch and all that.

What a cool world we live in. I Hate It Here.

My first listen of "But Daddy I Love Him" was absolutely loving her criticism of religious judgement

I like “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” has almost Postal Service quality on the chorus with its instrumentation. Get Jimmy Tamborello behind the boards for her next album!

Not to mention that Swift has had Sabrina Carpenter as her opener.

It’s too bad because they’re both so talented and I’d love to see them work together. If she can patch it up with Katy Perry, there’s still hope. Will be interesting if this causes two camps to form, with those produced by Dan Nigro and those produced by Antonoff.
