I think the way that Taylor values ownership of her art makes the whole Olivia thing so much worse. You're going to demand songwriting credit from a young artist who clearly looks up to you, on a song that only bears a passing resemblance to your song, when you already have unimaginable wealth and success? And then partially because of that, Olivia faced this whole barrage of criticism for "ripping off" other artists on her first album, when it's all just the exact "inspired by X" songwriting approach that ANY young songwriter explores. Honestly, one of the truest "never meet your heroes" stories that has ever played out in the public limelight.

I'll say it again: Olivia should have been the feature on "Nothing New," a song that is, if not specifically about her, about the idea of someone like her. If that song was really sitting in the vault, then Taylor was always a little scared of what it would mean for her when the "next Taylor Swift" came along. And, welp, Olivia is definitely the most credible "next Taylor Swift" that we've had. The song would have been better with her on it, and maybe those two could have buried the hatchet.

Honestly some of things Taylor does like the writing credits or the million vinyl variants released (that each have a different bonus song incentivizing fans to buy all variants) boil down to “Why do you need to do this, you have unimaginable wealth” or even continuing to play the victim at times boils down to “You have unimaginable and unprecedented success and have never actually fallen from grace, you are not the victim” haha

  8. Like, yeah, she doesn't NEED to fight for seemingly tiny things (to her), but I like to think she is trying to help set a precedent for other artists, especially women, to get what they deserve in terms of writing credit, fair pay, etc etc. If Taylor just "shook it off", then people would tell smaller artists to shake it off, as well. I dunno, maybe that's just me looking at her in rose colored glasses, and hoping she isn't so petty, but makes sense to me. I also wonder how much of the writing credit stuff was from her specifically vs her team pushing it.

I think if she was trying to set an example she wouldn’t have gone after another young woman in the business for a song that has slight similarities at most.

Elvis Costello had the best response to this:

I don’t think you can attribute anythings to her “team” anymore. It’s her empire; she’s the CEO. If she didn’t want to go for that writing credit, they wouldn’t have. You have to give her ALL the agency, Brad, including for the bad stuff.

The Costello response is pure class.

According to Jack, Olivia’s team approached them first. I guess they could have said no, though.

Not to go too off topic here but when the songwriting credits thing happened, this is what Olivia’s father retweeted

listening to this again and i like it much better this time around. still i feel like Taylor's voice and lyrics kinda just blends into the grey of the production.

He actually never said this. Here is his exact quote:

“I had never met her, and I had never been in a room with her. So it’s interesting… because another song on that album, that was an interpolation of [the Antonoff co-written Swift song] ‘New Year’s Day’. But yeah, it came through the channels that the bit on ‘Deja Vu’ was inspired by that bridge and we were going to be credited, and I thought that was really cool.”

also Olivia’s dad would not have retweeted that if Olivia’s team initiated giving credits

He was definitely being very vague there. I had never heard the phrase “came through the channels” before he said that haha.

I'm blown away by how much bootleg merch I see on TikTok. I've seen a ton of ads of sweaters with TTPD tracklisting in cute layouts or her face with Posty's tattoos from the Fortnight video. A lot of it looks a hell of a lot better than her official merch.

The only piece of Taylor merch I own is a shirt from the Eras tour that someone else got for me. I think that shirt looks pretty good overall. I just don't understand how the most popular artist in the world can have such bland merch offerings year after year. Swifties eat it up though, so i don't see it changing anytime soon. :eyeroll:

Taylor, if your merch didn't blow absolute chunks, your fans wouldn't have to take matters into their own hands and make their own!
