I don't think I find any of the examples in the first section fair other than Stafford pre-Rams. I do agree with the second paragraph and your point overall

 

I have not forgotten

 

Allen, Burrow, Herbert, Lawrence, Lamar, Tua, etc. all never gonna escape the "coming up short" vibe until Mahomes stops playing because no matter what they have to go through KC

Burrow had his one chance but I'm betting on Mahomes every time going forward

 

But at the end of the day all anyone cares about is winning, whether it be awards or rings, so it's moot

I agree with this, but I also think it's fair to say that those QBs choke away big moments and are a step or two below those 3 or 4 elite guys.

 

I also just wanna say real quick no one is asking Herbert to be Mahomes. I'm saying like win 1 playoff game maybe

I think to be in the tier people WANT Herbert to be in he's probably gotta do more but I do recognize how much of this is purely situational so I just say, one playoff game. Then I'm good and can accept that there's a lot out of his control

8/14 he did not throw an INT at all

Yeah like, personally I find it really hard to fathom that he's above a guy like Hurts when Herbert couldn't beat the Jags with a 27 point lead. Obviously their defense fell apart but the offense didn't do a single thing in the second half

 

Herbert certainly doesn't need to get to Mahomes' level, but imo he needs to at least win a playoff game before he's put in the top non-Mahomes tier of QBs

Yes, but I still don't put Herbert on the same level as Burrow, Allen, Hurts, Lamar, etc

 

I guess there's 2 ways to look at ranking them, depending on that it could be different

"Who has had the better career?" looks different than "Who would you take right now to build a team?"

Right, every QB in the league is worse than Mahomes. The dude is one of one. The dude is elite and I think everyone else is a notch or two below him.

I view Burrow and Herbert and Lamar and Allen and some other QBs very similarly as great QBs worth building around, but you can poke holes in them as players if you want.

And a notch below them are good QBs like Hurts and Dak and Lawrence where I think they can take that step up, but I have concerns that they will plateau at this tier and be guys that you probably need borderline-perfect surroundings to make a legit run with them.

Winning in the league, especially in the playoffs, is tough. That’s why I think using “He chokes” as a detractor just gets so played out because you can say it about nearly every QB in the league now and throughout much of history. Only two teams go to the super bowl and sometimes it matters more about how healthy you are as a team and did you get hot at the right team rather than how good you actually are

 

I think it'd still take Hurts to build a team, because at least I've seen him win a playoff game and Herbert's only one (is it his only one?) was a 27-0 lead that ended 31-30

 

Yeah but what about that one game against the Jags where he was supposed to play corner and linebacker and edge rusher and also call a good defensive play?

 

Okay this made me roll my eyes, I'm definitely done with this now haha. That's incredibly dismissive to any of the actual conversation happening
