It obviously depends on the city, but I work in a lot of markets in apartment construction and cities are losing their identify for these cookie cutter apartment buildings and they are all 1 / 2 bedroom with very few 3. They're knocking down houses and old establishments, and then building stuff not catered for group living like renting a house would be and the costs to afford the most basic of apartment options (which are now all called 'luxury') are absurd. Great, soft close cabinets and tile ALL the way to the ceiling.... yipppe. Those old establishments are replaced by 'chains' that aren't chains because unless you go online, you wouldn't know that your unique Atlanta restaurant is also in Charlotte, Richmond and Nashville.

I do think that some younger people's work expectations are unrealistic (mostly in what a job entails, not the pay). I agree whole heartedly with things like wages not keeping up with inflation and housing costs and that they need to, but I don't agree with a lot of sentiments around 'quiet quitting' and 'act your wage' etc. It's probably due to my own personal experiences, but on a salary, it's not a 40 hour a week job. It shouldn't be a 60 hour week either, but some of the stances and hardlines that young workers want to draw are naïve.

Eh, I think you should expect to get paid for your work, and a healthy work life balance should be the norm. I say that as a teacher who literally always has work to do outside work hours so hah.

Good points on the apartments, that’s also what we see around here with the new construction. Luckily they aren’t knocking down old big houses to do it, but yeah a lot of the new construction apartment seems geared towards expensive 1 and 2 bedroom places. I see those prices when I look around here for my mom and have no idea how people afford them

I mostly agree and not to derail the thread with a conversation that's probably already been had before, but salary to me means there's always wiggle room on the hours worked, especially in an industry where the work flow is based around unpredictable situations. You're paid a salary to accomplish certain tasks, not to work a set number of hours and it's up to you to determine if the salary is paying you for your time or not. So I don't agree that new workers should enter the work force with high salary wants but also want 100% set hours, and a 100% concrete job description in which you can say 'nope, not in my description' or 'that's not going to get done this week because I hit my hours'. It's naïve to think that some industries can function in such a rigorous manner, and it's not always 'bad' management, and if it is, it's systemic and not just your direct boss. However, I know I get taken advantage of and am working on that, but I also know I wouldn't be where I am if I'd have been so hardlined in my early employment. It's a constant give and take and younger workers seem to think they can reset the whole system by entering employment with a no give mentality.

You can't wash a Cybertruck in direct sunlight.

You can't get a Mogwai wet or take it in direct sunlight.

Guys, I think we're on the verge of a horrifying revelation.

Isn’t there data that shows moving to a 32 hour work week doesn’t diminish productivity? And workers want salary for financial certainty, not any kind of expectation to work more. I don’t disagree that someone might have to do work not exactly in their job description but I think that work on top of the full week would be the complaint. I say this as a lawyer knowing we’ll be the last to be included in shorter working times.
I’m afraid to ask what you think worker expectations should be for family leave.

A lot better than currently offered, and the cost of daycare shouldnt be such a burden. I think the attitude towards men getting family leave is also toxic and was happy to hear a friend i know get 4 weeks. i would get zero and i know people who were mocked for taking 'paternity' leave. I'm all for a shift and inprovement in work life balance, i just see and hear some young workers expectations as unreasonable and unrealistic with how strict they want their hours and responsibilities to be mandated.

Yes, on the 32 hour work week. Studies show work expands to fill the time available, and if you offered people more free time, they'd get more done. There would still be give and take though and some workers workload would exceed 32 hours.
