Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Weathervanes (June 9, 2023) Album • Page 28

Discussion in 'Music Forum' started by DaydreamNation, Feb 21, 2023.

  1. Look, I wanna be clear tho: Jason is my favorite songwriter and musician doing the thing at the moment. Nashville sound is still a better record than most artists’ best records in their catalog. Still listen to it plenty and like it a lot

He crushed it in Philly last night. Voice was a little blown out on the high notes but the guitar playing burned it down. Here’s a section of “Decoration Day”.

Everyone was sitting at the beginning and I was worried but “Super 8” got everyone up and moving. Generally dislike that song but thankful for its crowd effect.

Set list was good! Got all of his big five slower ones (Cover, Elephant, Decoration, Alabama, Vampires) so you can’t really complain about that. He opened with “Saves The World” which didn’t really work for me and I think the only Reunions song we got was “Overseas”. I’m sure he’s cycling them out because he’s been playing them for the last three years but I’d have really liked a few more.

His voice sounded a little rough on his Late Show performance the other night, and that was just him singing Cast Iron hah

Every time I see him I am struck not by Isbell or his songs (both of which are of course excellent), but by how incredible HIS BAND is. Tightest, best, live band around.

this is an extremely stupid reason for a revive for which I apologize in advance

ever since I saw love lies bleeding I've had the same intrusive thought...... a version of "death wish" that in weird al parody style recaps the plot of this movie, starting with "did you ever love a woman who can deadlift?"

can we get AI on this so I can rest

not entirely sure how to feel about that tbh. my first reaction is that i can completely understand how painful it must have been for jenn to hear the song, but beyond that i'm just not sure if he's really done anything "wrong" per se. i'm not sure what justin and jason having been estranged has to do with anything.

Yeah, not sure what to do with that. Jason has been writing songs for years about the tolls that addiction takes, so it's not surprising he'd write a song about a friend (even an estranged one) who died because of addiction. I've seen some people saying the song is "cheap" and that Jason is "monetizing" his friend's death and Justin's family's grief with details included for "shock value," but I don't think that's accurate at all. The song is effective because it is unflinching. That's probably what he meant in saying the song "has to exist," because it's important to tell these stories honestly.

The worst part of this, for me, is hearing that he hasn't been super receptive or empathetic to Jenn's point of view. I don't think he needed to get her approval rights or anything; he lost Justin too, and can process that how he likes. But it sounds like he could have handled it better.

I have thought the lyrics are decidedly harsh towards a dead man. I can see why they would be upsetting to the family. I don't really see why they would need to continue to engage with the song though, no matter how many times Jason plays it

A lot of the comments on the post are calling Jason arrogant, which is something I kind of agree with based just on his online presence.

i get where she’s coming from but are songwriters not supposed to write about anyone they’ve ever met/been close to, for fear of that person’s wife/partner/parents/children/etc etc not sharing the exact same viewpoints as the songwriter? there would be, like, no songs because of that

to be clear, jason probably should have reached out first and should almost certainly reach out now but at a certain point as long as you aren’t being hateful you kinda have to let songwriters write songs

I can’t help but empathize with her. To be clear I don’t think either of them are wrong. Jason has every right to write the song as does she to state her opinion on it. But I get why it would bother her that the song talks about her daughter. As a parent you cant help but be protective of them.

I agree though that the bothersome part is it seems that Jason is basically ignoring how she feels completely.

For better or worse, there's basically a zero percent chance Jason does not issue some sort of public response to this now that it's out in the open.

I watched this, I send her peace. I don’t think Jason did anything wrong by writing his song. I don’t think she’s wrong to have sour feelings about it. Sometimes both sides can feel a certain way and it is what it is, life is pretty messy.

In the video though, she talks about the child crying in the car while the song was playing? Why would she put the song on with her young daughter in the car, how did she perceive that going?
