  5. Thoughts on some new weekly discussion topics? I think we're getting bored of "what's your favorite _____" or "what are the best _____"

So i found this article from 2000 of president Bill Clinton doing an interview about films, and I found it quite interesting.

I loathe being in agreement with Bill Clinton a little.

I forgot how amazing Cave of Forgotten Dreams is. Cave paintings by paleolithic people 35,000 years ago that are totally preserved and show accurate, stylish, expressive illustrations of mammoths and Wooly Rhinos and stuff drawn from memory. Most adult humans now couldn't draw that well, and those paintings were made pretty much before any context of art history as we know it today existed.

Yep! There's a 3D version too on bluray (when I saw it in 3D in theaters, the close-ups of the paintings gave you a better idea of the shape of the rock walls they were painted on. Some of the paintings were made over raised surfaces that give them the illusion of being 3D refliefs, really cool) so if you have a 3D TV it might be worth checking out as well at some point.

I don't have 3D but I'll definitely be watching this tonight. It sounds awesome! Setting a reminder to make sure I don't forget about it.

Every year or so John from Cincinnati deserves to be watched again, and it develops more mature emotional resonance each time. It is quite remarkable that something like it got made; obtuse, spiritual, philosophical, and uninterested in hiding some of the strings in plotting (why are all of these characters hanging around the hotel?). It shows the limits of television; despite being 4-5 times longer than the average film, it is regarded as a failure for being cancelled after one ten-episode season. In the landscape of television, it is considered short and cut-off, even though it takes a complete story, with the season ending with the acknowledgment that it could be the last. However, since the expectation is five-eight seasons and a hundred episodes, it does not meet that threshold of greatness, even if continuing long-term would have diluted the product into something more mainstream.

It is experimental television, two words that rarely go together.

In the event anyone is even vaguely interested in John from Cincinnati based on what I wrote, this video of David Milch trying to explain the religious/philosophical themes of the script to the actors and set people is one of the better accidentally hilarious behind-the-scenes videos ever. It gives you all of the insight you need into why "art cinema" fails so often; if your own crew cannot understand it, how can anyone else?

So I guess the Criterion/Hulu deal isn't expiring completely? I see several but not all are expiring on my watch list and can't find a good source for full details

Never mind, they're all expired and just stayed in my watchlist

I had no idea how hilarious King of the Hill is. Most of this went over my head in elementary/middle school.

I think The CW might actually be one of my absolute favorite channels. Flash, Legends, Arrow, Supergirl, Crazy Ex, and I genuinely enjoy the new shows No Tomorrow and Frequency. I hear great things about both Jane the Virgin and iZombie, so when I get around to them I'm probably gonna love them too. And then theres a so-melodramatic-it's-funny Archie show Riverdale coming?! Stacked.

So a little off topic, what are some of your favorite film/tv theories? Just those fun fan wank theories and ideas that may or may not have some credence to them. I know Tarintinos film universe is a popular one.

One of my favorites involves two of my most loved movies: Robocop and Terminator. The theory is that Murphy from robocop is a very very early terminator and helps plant the seed of creating this machine killers. Yoyodine and Wayland-Yutani are the major thing connecting the movies, as well as connecting it to the Aliens franchise. This also morphs off into another theory involving Aliens and Starship Troopers. Obviously it's bogus since we know how the terminators and the machines actually came to be, plus Yoyodine is a common reference throughout many science fiction stories. Still, it's a fun little theory.
