There are a lot of hard-right Vietnamese-Americans. Similar to Cuban-Americans here in Florida, they think Democrats are too socialist.

Got a chance to see an early screening at AMC last night. This thing sucks,

  3. Unfortunate but not entirely unexpected. Was a big fan of Ex Machina and Annihilation, but Men not so much. I guess not every director can manage something like Peele's three for the right out the gate.

  4. Will be revisiting Men soon to see if I was wrong or if I still enjoy it more than others. Sucks he went from one of my favorite new filmmakers to something I have virtually no interest in

Honestly might not even fuck with this one

  6. Even if it's not an attempt to stir discourse, it feels like one, and the feeling of needing an opinion on a film about a second American civil war at this point in time feels exhausting.

A movie about journalists covering a war happening in America and then a character says unironically that their job is to not have an opinion on anything that they capture.

    It sucks shit.

I read an interview with Garland in The Atlantic where he spoke about being inspired by old school journalists who "deliberately removed bias." So that doesn't surprise me that it's in the movie.

I'll still give it a shot because I like the majority of his stuff, even Men.

Garland said in an interview that he instructed the cast to watch Come and See as part of their prep..wtf lol don't say that shit Alex unless you fully went there and I doubt you went there as hard as Come and See

I might just watch this movie so I can have more context when a bunch of podcasts I listen to inevitably do episodes making fun of it lol

Jesus Christ the hubris of comparing your movie to Come and See, one of the most harrowing films ever made.

Good convo on the movie. Duralde said movie is shockingly apolitical, which he says hurts it. I haven’t seen it yet, but that is wild.

The film being apolitical actually intrigues me even more tbh. Interested in how he’ll approach that in a movie that seems like it would otherwise be preachy about one side more than the other.

unrelated, but this promotional "create your own toy army man" tool for the movie is creepily accurate civilwar.movie

I thought the “apolitical” angle he was trying to take would be interesting in an anti-war/no one wins kind of way. In the actual movie, it just ends up feeling cowardly and with nothing to say about anything at all.

also laughable that Come and See would be a good comparison point - it’s nowhere near as harrowing. It’s basically Warzone Pokémon Snap

Not sure why people are upset about the Come and See thing. Did he actually compare his movie to it, or did he just tell the cast to watch it as a way of getting them into a certain headspace? If it's the latter, I don't see the issue.

I know it was most likely for a headspace but it certainly doesn’t show on screen

Lol who cares then. Directors do stuff like that all the time.

As someone that has seen it - Yeah maybe Alex Garland should retire from directing.

Is it at least technically impressive? Visuals/performances wise?

Performances are good. Script is idiotic
